CHICAGO, July 6 (Reuters) - Smithfield Foods (SFD.N) said on Monday fire damage at its Patrick Cudahy meat plant in Wisconsin was extensive, but added that the few employees in the building when the fire broke out escaped unhurt.

Smithfield, the world's largest pork processor and hog producer, said the company's other facilities would be able to make up any product shortfalls in short order.

Fire broke out at the facility on Sunday night and was brought under control on Monday. Patrick Cudahy specializes in branded packaged meats, including bacon, dry sausage, ham and sliced meats. One of its most popular brands is Sweet Apple-Wood Smoke Flavor bacon. (Reporting by K.T. Arasu)
