NEW YORK (Reuters) - Diversified manufacturer Emerson Electric Co. (EMR.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Wednesday it expects to benefit from investments made by technology companies to build warehouses full of computer servers to support growing demand for Internet services.
The facilities, known as "server farms," require a continuous flow of electricity and environmental controls to keep the machines running and Emerson offers products to meet both needs, Emerson Chief Executive David Farr said.
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Google Inc. (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and other software companies continue to invest heavily for server farms that power fast-growing applications such as Internet search and Web-based e-mail.
"So when Microsoft and Google and those guys make these choices to build these data centers and there's a lot of money spent, we are very much helped by it," Farr said at the Reuters Manufacturing and Transportation Summit in New York.
Large software companies are offering a variety of applications hosted on their own servers with available data storage. Many small and mid-sized business prefer using these Web services to lower technology costs.
Microsoft surprised investors last month with plans to invest billions in new businesses including Web services. Part of the spending is expected to come in the construction of server farms to support those online services.
Switches required to go back and forth between primary power sources and back-up generators and environmental controls represent two growing areas serving these technology centers, Farr said.
