NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tired of waiting around for your mobile phone to recharge?
Analog chip maker National Semiconductor Corp (NSM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is promising relief in the form of a technology it is developing to charge cell phones in an instant, Chief Executive Brian Halla said on Monday.
"We'll try to be the first company with an instant charge capability in a handset. You plug it in a wall and it's charged," Halla told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York.
"Probably we'll be showing something within the next 12 calendar months .... We have a pretty aggressive R&D campaign going on to make this possible," he said.
Halla said that rather than go into the phone charger business, National Semiconductor, which generates more than a third of its revenue from wireless, would look to sell the technology to existing phone charger suppliers.
The idea is to help reduce the risk of cell phones running out of power -- often a source of frustration for consumers who now need to keep phones plugged in for an hour or two to fully recharge batteries.
"It's not going to be as much of an energy saver as a matter of convenience," said Halla.
