UPDATE 1-Teva, Barr say FTC seeks more merger information
(Adds details on FTC request and merger, NEW YORK dateline)
NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Generic drugmakers Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (TEVA.O) and Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc BRL.N on Wednesday said they had each received a request for additional information from U.S. regulators regarding their planned merger.
The companies said the so-called "second request" from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission will extend the waiting period for the agency's approval of the transaction, although they still expect the deal to close in late 2008.
Israel-based Teva, the world's largest generic drug company, in July said it would buy rival Barr for $7.46 billion to expand its leadership in the U.S. market and bolster its presence in Europe. (Reporting by Ransdell Pierson, editing by Maureen Bavdek)
