NEW YORK, June 20 (Reuters) - American Express Co. (AXP.N), the credit card and travel services company, on Wednesday promoted several executives and reorganized its operations into consumer and business units, in a bid to better focus its operations.

Alfred Kelly was promoted to president overseeing the global consumer group, which includes such operations as credit cards, customer service, small business and consumer travel. He was previously group president of consumer, small business and merchant services.

Edward Gilligan was named vice chairman overseeing the global business-to-business group, which includes merchant transactions, network services, commercial cards, business travel and international banking. He was previously group president of American Express International and Global Corporate Services.

Separately, American Express named Judson Linville chief executive of U.S. consumer operations, reporting to Kelly. Linville will remain head of consumer card services.

In addition, the company said it created a nine-person companywide operating committee, led by Chief Executive Kenneth Chenault. The committee replaces the global leadership team, it said. Chenault, Kelly, Gilligan and Linville will be among the committee's members.

American Express shares rose 20 cents to $63.35 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
