NEW YORK, Jan 8 (Reuters) - The average 30-year U.S. fixed mortgage rate dropped for a 10th consecutive week to 5.01 percent, from 5.10 percent in the prior period, Freddie Mac said on Thursday.

The rate is the lowest ever recorded by Freddie Mac, the second-largest provider of funding for residential mortgages. Freddie Mac's survey began in 1971. (Reporting by Al Yoon; Editing by Tom Hals)
