US STOCKS-Indexes tumble 2 percent after Bernanke comments

NEW YORK, July 15 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks slid as much as 2 percent on Tuesday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said a weakening housing market, tighter credit and rising oil prices threaten the economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI dropped 215.11 points, or 1.95 percent, to 10,840.08, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX slid 25.67 points, or 2.09 percent, to 1,202.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC shed 41.88 points, or 1.89 percent, to 2,170.99. (Reporting by Ellis Mnyandu, Editing by Kenneth Barry)
