UPDATE 1-Columbia Sportswear to combine functions of brands
(Recasts, adds detail)
NEW YORK, Feb 29 (Reuters) - U.S. outdoor apparel maker Columbia Sportswear Co (COLM.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Friday it will put the sales, marketing and service units of its Montrail brand under the management team of its Mountain Hardwear brand.
The changes, effective May 1, are designed to increase sales, improve efficiency and increase consumer awareness because many of the two brands' customers are the same.
Montrail makes trail running and hiking footwear while Mountain Hardwear makes mountaineering and outdoor equipment, as well as clothing and accessories.
U.S. product distribution and shipping will continue to be processed through Columbia Sportswear's Kentucky facility, the company said.
Operations oversight for the Montrail brand will be the responsibility of Mike Wallenfels, president of Mountain Hardwear.
A company spokesman said there would be "no notable headcount reduction" as part of the realignment. (Additional reporting by Martinne Geller; editing by Carol Bishopric)
