S&P falls on credit concerns

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Standard & Poor's 500 index briefly fell 1 percent late in a highly volatile session on Wednesday, as concerns about credit conditions mounted.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 31.38 points, or 0.24 percent, at 13,180.61. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 11.88 points, or 0.82 percent, at 1,443.39, after earlier falling more than 1 percent. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 23.72 points, or 0.93 percent, at 2,522.55.
