NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 2008 down 33.8 percent, marking its third-worst year in history.

Below is a list of the ten worst years for the index.

*The stock exchange was closed from July 30, 1914 until December 12, 1914 at the beginning of World War I; from March 3, 1933 until March 15, 1933 due to a mandatory closing of all banks issued by Franklin D. Roosevelt, and from September 10 until September 17, 2001 due to the Sept 11 attack on the World Trade Center.
