Poor Zimmerman. A baby he is. His dad, attorney and his friends are making making statements which are only expected of them (not other way for them to be newsworthy) and trying their best to get this man-boy of out of jail. Afterall he murdered a kid, not a big deal for them or for him. His prison mates will serve him justice if only he lands few days in jail.

The real crux of this matter: Trayvon Martin’s death is tragic, but George Zimmerman is not wholly the party primarily at fault. Rather, the NRA, Florida’s legislature, and governor Jeb Bush who installed this Draconian law bear most of the responsibility. Placing concealed weapons in the hands of untrained persons outside the home and then, in effect, immunizing them from prosecution if they pursue and kill under a misguided “self-defense law” is a formula not for effective law enforcement or personal protection but, rather, for death of innocent people. While I sincerely hope that Florida and other states with similar laws reexamine them, something tells me that their “Wild West” attitude toward responsible gun control, ownership and use is not likely to change anytime soon.

What happened is a tragedy for Mr. Martin and his family. My prayers go out to the Martin family. Having said that the Black Panther Party has no business saying they are offering a bounty for Mr. Zimmerman. They are a bunch of thugs and idiots. Always have been and always will be. Let the justice system do its job. Where were they when their members were intimidating voters. I did not hear people offering a bounty for them.

I don’t see what the fuss is all about – Zimmerman knows what to do if he “feels threatened”.

Mr. Zimmerman’s lawyer will defend his client under the protection of self defense, presumably using the cut on his nose as evidence of an attack. The problem with self defense in this case is that he pursued the victim at length. He was fully aware that he did not have any authority to do that. I am unaware of any statute that allows you to claim self defense for the use of deadly force to defend yourself against an unarmed person who hit you with his hand (the only weapon he had) because you stalked and harrassed him. This need not be linked in any way to “stand your ground” or other concealed carry laws or neighborhood watch programs in general. If you are not law enforcement, you have no authority to stalk or chase anyone headed away from you because you are suspicious of their motives. When the “bad guy” leaves, the threat to your person leaves with them. Had he not killed this young man, Zimmerman might still be facing charges for stalking or harrassment.

Here’s how I’d like to see it unfold. Zimmerman is out for an evening stroll at an undisclosed location, a Black Panther sees him and follows him for a few blocks, Zimmerman gets nervous and tries to elude him, the two meet up in the shadows and there is a brief struggle, Zimmerman is shot dead. The Black Panther can claim self defense. Justice is served.

Since when is it against the law to follow someone in your neighborhood that you are not familiar with? Following someone is not assault. Smashing someone in the face is assault. No matter who is at fault in this situation, it is very sad for all parties involved. Trayvon may turn out to be a wonderful kid that was in the wrong place and the wrong time but the new laws that allow individuals to protect themselves are long overdue. The killing of Trayvon needs to be fully investigated and the rule of law needs to be respected by all sides.

Your statement has flaws regarding “authority” and “stalking”. Any citizen can report and determine the nature of suspicious behaviour. A community member can ascertain the actions of an unknown person, but to make assumptions without facts, we don’t know what happened.

As for the self defense against an attacker who is punching…I would suggest a review of the law and cases of attacks which are violent and the person as large or larger and stronger against a victim.

The event is tragic nonetheless however, lets not set upon a course of action due to biased or sensationalized reporting.

(1) Victim realized he was being followed by some man and said he was afraid (witness) That means The killer committed an assault – placing someone in fear of an unlawful touching

(2) ZImmermans’ claim that he got out of his vehicle to look at a street sign because he was ‘lost’ is completely uncredible – a lie. He patrolled the developement (all of 3 roads) obsessively. He had just given the police very specific directions to his location. He said he was chasing the victim. The 911 reveals that he was breathing heavily as he went after the victim on foot.

Zimmerman was stalking and pursuing his victim. Zimmerman – from the victim’s viewpoint – was acting JUST LIKE a serial killer or sexual predator after a potential victim

(3) ZImmerman intercepted the victim and blocked his way. (Witnesses). That was false imprisonment – a crime. He had NO right to stop the victim and block his path.

(4) ZImmerman then menaced the victim by blocking his path, getting close to him and making demands – all while wearing a gun. That is ANOTHER assault. (witnesses)

SO the victim is being pursued through the dark streets by a large older man with a gun…… anyone who thinks the boy should have stood there and obeyed this aggressive pursuer dressed in regular clothing is nuts. From the victim’s viewpoint (and the one that counts when deciding what the victim had the right to do), this creep could logically have been a sexual predator or worse.

The victim would have the absolute right to have attempted to get away by hitting the killer with his hand or bottle of ice tear or kicking him or pushing him away or shoving him off his feet or whstever it took.

The killer had committed at least 3 criminal acts when he was was seen and heard confronting the victim. And the only one entitled to self-defense is the victim who was then murdered by the one committing crimes against him

Zimmerman was doing what most people should be doing, he was playing an active role in his community by providing assistance to the police to disrupt criminal activity. While his actions in that role might have had the right intent, he nonetheless made a mistake in pursuing Clark. Be that as it may, that gives Clark absolutely no reason to attack and beat Zimmerman.

If I was on the jury I would see it that way, as well. I am sure once the evidence is presented to the grand jury and possible trial that others will see it this way as well.

Here’s the question I have. Why didn’t Treyvon stop and wait with Zimmerman for the police to show up, or knock on someone’s door and tell them to call the police? Instead he choose to confront the person following him. I’m not saying what Zimmerman done was right, but from what I have found so far Treyvon did not try either. This to me led to Zimmerman’s suspicion of him. To me Treyvon was wrong for his action and that led to his death. This could have ended a lot differently if Treyvon had just stopped and waited. The often erroneous and incomplete reporting surrounding this (not this article in particular) is unfortunate. The truth is the investigation was handled poorly initially, but a thorough investigation is now underway and a grand jury will consider the evidence. Our justice system exists for one reason: so that all of the evidence can be heard by a jury of citizens who will deliberate instead of rush to judgment. There are lots of facts hidden in the rush of hyperventilated coverage that are disturbingly coming out now: e.g. that the accused was in fact injured and that a scuffle occurred. It is also disturbing that the press is only circulating old unflattering photos of the accused and what looks like a photo of a 13 year old for the deceased who was actually 17. This is already a tragedy due to young Trayvon’s death. If this turns into a real, as opposed to high tech, lynching, many in the press will have blood on their hands as well. We need to tone this down and let the justice system work.

He should trust in the authorities and the law of the state. It’s not like someone could provoke a pseudo-confrontation and shoot him in cold blood, then claim self-defense and get away with murder. That kind of thing would be severly punished in this country, right?

Of the Black population that does do crime, the most dangerous age group is Black males betwen the ages of 14 and 19.
Additionally, over the last 20 years, over 1,000,000 Whites have been murdered, raped, assaulted, or robbed by Blacks. During that same 20 years, only 183,000 Blacks have been the victims of the same crimes at the hands of Whites. Thus, Zimmerman had just cause for concern when he spotted a young, Black, male, stranger wandering through his gated community at night.
So, while you are so eager to scream RACISM, take the time to look at the whole picture.
1- Gated communities were developed to defend against (black) crime.
2- Zimmerman had the right to follow, report and confront a stranger.
3- All evidence indicates that Zimmerman was assaulted by Trayvon.
4- The police at the scene found it to be self defense.

Neighborhood watches function because the members know the neighborhood and report anyone suspicious. When word gets out that members are watching, the bad guys move their activities to a different neighborhood. When the police are overworked, response times to reports moves into hours. Then the watch member should keep an eye on the suspicious party until they leave or the police do respond. If the watch member elects to greet the suspicious party they need to use tact and judgment.
That is the nature of the beast.

I hope that some good will come out of the tragic loss of Trayvon Martins life. Any loss of life of any person, especially a young person is a tragedy. This caused an outrage nationally. But why isn’t there an outrage when other teens have been senselessy murdered? Last year over 42 teenagers in Chicago have been killed. According to report from CBS 50% of all murdered are black and 93% of those are black on black (http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-201_162-3153497.html). Yes, discrimination is wrong and needs to be wiped out. But many black leaders should also focus on the black community to help prevent more needless deaths. In Atlanta just 3 weeks ago a young black child age 10 was killed in a home intrusion from a mistaken drug deal. Why wasn’t there an outrage then?????

All the more reason that Zimmerman needs to be taken into custody, immediately. The sooner he gets his day in court, the better.

If Zimmerman were in JAIL, where he belongs, then his friends would have nothing to fear. Arrest him and allay these poor peoples fears for this losers life.

This is why I think Zimmerman is a murderer. He was told by the dispatcher to stay in his car. He was told not to follow the “suspect”. He caused the conflict that never would have happened if he had followed instructions and not involved himself with Trayvon. How this story has been reported is a disgrace. The media picking it up many weeks after it happened, the victimization of Zimmerman, first identified as White but now apparently Hispanic (apparently our laws are so skewed against Whites that being a Latino makes Zimmerman much less likely to be charged with a “hate” crime).

Via archived Facebook photos and comments, it is coming to light that Trayvon was a tattooed drug dealer who liked wearing a gold “grill” on his teeth. He apparently was very violent by getting into a lot of fights and was suspended from his school for trespassing. He is NOT the innocent-looking Hollister-wearing football player that the liberal media is portraying; those photos are several years old. Recent Facebook photos show him shirtless with pants hanging below the scrotum and also flashing what seems to be gang signs. Is he really who we think he is? Well… Now there is a witness who claims that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman first, and the fact that Zimmerman’s face was covered with blood and his clothes covered in grass stains supports this notion. If this proves out to be true, then I have no pity for Trayvon or his family/supporters… it just means there is 1 less thug on the streets.

There is a witness who told the police he saw Matin on top of Zimmerman, whose head had been bashed on the ground apparantly. Zimmerman also has Black friends saying he is not Racist. And there are reports that it was Zimmerman’s voice on the tape yelling for help.

All the facts are not in. But certainly there should be some official response to the Black Panther’s seeking to subvert the justice system with their bounty. Unless this falls under Eric Holder’s blanket hands-off policy towards the Panthers….because it “would reflect negatively on His People” to quote him.

You cannot pursue somebody and then claim self-defense when you shoot them. Young Mr. Martin had every reason to be suspicious of Mr. Zimmerman. Zimmerman was told not to pursue Mr. Martin and that is his downfall. I would be pretty pissed if someone was following me and I did not know who they were. Umm…hispanic is an ethnic group, not a race. We have whites, blacks, mixed, etc. We even have asians. So Zimmerman’s description as a “White Hispanic” is correct.

There were several witnesses that say that Trayvon was the aggressor. I think it is a tragedy that this young man is dead but I think there were bad decisions made by both Zimmerman and Trayvon.

I urge every American to act in a peaceful manner and urge all to remain civil. Regardless of the outcome, we must pray for Trayvon’s family for healing. ”

Nope, didn’t happen…he used this again as a political football. He once again took a side before all the facts were out. Zimmerman was beat up. He was smaller that Trayvon and was, according to an eye witness, being hit as he was laying on the ground. I am not saying anyone here was right or wrong. Just want cooler heads to prevail.

It appears from everything that has come out, and despite shoddy reporting that Martin, made a mistake, he decided to attack a guy that was armed. Personally I would like to know the facts, but I am inclined to believe that if Zimmerman wasn’t taken into custody it was because the officers, reasonable people I presume, didn’t think Zimmerman was guilt of a crime.

Hopefully Zimmerman has another firearm, since the one used that night was undoubtedly taken into evidence. If he doesn’t I think we should take up a collection. Then if any of these thugs who want to threaten Zimmerman show up they will learn the lesson that all criminals need to learn, that Americans are free people able to defend themselves, not victims, and you do violence at your own risk!!

So apparently people seem to be getting confused by racial terminology. “Hispanic/Latino,” is not a race (a group of people who share a common geneology). It is an ethnic group (a group of people united/classified by a shared language/culture). Therefore is is quite possible to have white hispanics, black hispanics, etc. So if anyone is angry at Reuters for describing Zimmerman as a “White hispanic,” they need to calm down and take a high school social studies class or something.

I think people will calm down some when the FBI analyzes the 911 tapes and discovers that Zimmerman was the one screaming for help so that he would not have to shoot Martin.
I have researched this case, and debated it quite a bit on another thread, where it was about 8000 to 2, me being one of the 2.
But suffice it to say that there is a ton of disinformation and embellishment going on here as well as a lot of stereotyping, assumptions, and demonization of Zimmerman that is a bit over the top.
I am not saying I am completely convinced that he is innocent, but I am convinced that he very well might be, and is not the wannabe nutcase that the media has painted him as.
The media is ONLY reporting the facts that support one scenario, and they are purposefully leaving out a ton of both physical evidence and witness statements that indicate that Zimmerman was the victim was beaten badly while laying on his back, and then when the fight had stopped at one point, and Martin left briefly, Zimmerman remained on the ground catching his breath and recovering and asking for help, when Martin returned and continued to beat him.
The back of his head was injured and bloody as was his face which is indicative of being punched hard in the face repeatedly. These types of blows are very dangerous when your head has a backstop and you can get brain damage, lose consciousness or die.
Further the prelim. partial incident report reported not only these injuries but the fact that Zimmermans entire backside was completely saturated with moisture, and there was ground in blood dirt and grass.
Additionally, Martin was found dead laying face down with his hands directly underneath him. This is indicative that he was on his knees leaning forward when he was shot in the chest, which he clutched as he collapsed and died almost instantly. Zimmerman got out of the way right after the shot.
There is no way for a body to be rolled into that position, or to achieve it from a standing fall. Martin was on his knees over Zimmerman who was on his back. This is consistant with all of the other physical evidence.
We know that Z followed M to keep tabs on him, but this in and of itself is nothing more than par for the course for any security or private citizen who has called the police on someone and wants to keep tabs on them for arriving officers while keeping their distance.
I did that kind of work for years when I was younger, and I would have done the same thing, and have thousands of times.
It is not the same as attempting an arrest or assaulting somebody, and in fact those actions would have been inconsistant with Zimmermans previous restraint.
All indications are that he did it right, at least as far as can be documented. And after that, it is not unreasonable to assume to possibility that he continued to show the same knowledge and restraint.
He could have screwed up. But we don’t know that. Nobody does.
And it is just as likely that Martin attacked him as the other way around.
All the physical evidence and most of the original witness statements indicate that it was Zimmerman who was on the ground early on and that Martin could have left, as the aggressor, at any time.
Further this fight lasted 2-4 minutes and Zimmerman could have shot Martin at any time and did not.
He did not want to shoot him, or he would have sooner.
He did not want to arrest him, there was no crime, or he would have sooner.
He only shot Martin as his head was being pummeled by the 150 lb. football player who was a fully grown young adult, not the 80 lb. 13 year old you see in the 4 year old photos.
Let Sharpton and Farrakan run out of steam and make fools of themselves.
The FBI has the technology to determine who said what on the 911 tapes, you can hear them in the background.
I can hear martin yelling, but the one yelling for help, especially at the end, was Zimmerman, who after a long fight, finally had to shoot Martin or risk losing consciousness to a man who was still hitting him long after the fight was over and won.
Regarding Zimmerman’s apparent use of a racial slur on another tape and another day, it does not rise to the level of establishing a pattern or disposition of bigotry. People sometimes use less politically correct terms when frustrated and under stress. It does not make them bigoted.

Further all the evidence of his family ties, mentorships, friendships and support for black people are more than enough to balance one errant word, especially when all those black people who know Zimmerman say that he is a nice man and not a bigot.
If the FBI findings show that Zimmerman was not the one yelling for help, then he should go to prison, but if he was, as I believe, then people need to back the hell off and let him have his life back.
And if I were him, I would sue the hell out of a few liberal rags in Florida for lying about him and demonizing him unfairly.

Martin was a “model student.” Martin was on suspension for drugs and vandalism. Zimmerman shot him for no reason. Zimmerman shot him because Martin was pounding his head on the pavement. Obviously we are in deep ignorance about what actually happened and will remain so until the grand jury meets. I’m sorry, but I am unable to be furious about something I don’t really know anything about – and neither should you.

First of all, this is a tragedy. I pray for relief to the Martin family and I pray that Zimmerman can forgive himself.

To those saying “the 911 dispatcher told him not to follow”, let’s get one thing straight; a 911 dispatcher is not a law enforcement officer and nobody is required by law to follow the instructions of a 911 dispatcher.

In Texas, you can use deadly force simply protecting a third person’s property. A 70 year old man a few years back did this very thing while on the phone with a 911 dispatcher who told him not to go outside and confront the burglars at his neighbor’s house. The man was not indicted by a grand jury after killing the 2 perps (who were black illegal immigrants from South America). The local X-man, Quannell X, led protests in front of this man’s home.

The only requirement in the state of Texas to use force, up to and including deadly force, is that one “reasonably fears that his/her life is in danger”. I’m willing to bet the statutes in Florida are similar. It matters not whether the attacker is armed. Fists placed properly can kill. A head being smashed on the ground can cause traumatic brain injury resulting in death.

I’m a concealed handgun license holder and we are required to go through training, take tests regarding the law, and demonstrate proficiency in the use of a firearm. I’m sure Mr. Zimmerman was not without training.

Finally, if Mr. Zimmerman is a white hispanic, the Mr. Obama is a white black man. My 14 year old daughter is white, although her mother is hispanic…well, at least until time for college entrance…

The bottom line is let’s let the justice system work. Mr. Zimmerman is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Whether or not Mr. Zimmerman is convicted of anything doesn’t reduce the hurt the Martin family must certainly feel. However, if Mr. Zimmerman was, in fact, attacked and feared for his life, then he should be acquitted.

I remember before there were carry laws in Florida, tourists were scared to go there because there were too many carjackings. After the Carry Law was brought in the Carjacking stopped. Tourists were not so afraid and Florida was a good destination.

Some sanity is needed here. Trayvon, from all appearances, was attacking Zimmerman – and he is not the little boy portrayed, but a very big, strong adult. But, Zimmerman acted in negligence, ignoring police instructions and the very training he was familiar with, and thus appeared to cause this un-needed death. Justice yes – death by negligence against Zimmerman seems to be the right charge here – and YES he should be charged! Murder, probably not, although it needs to be thoroughly investigated. Unprovoked assault by Martin probably not – he had no record and had everything to lose, but this too should be investigated.

According to the Constitution I defended for over 20 years, what he needs is an impartial investigation, and then perhaps a grand jury followed by a FAIR trial (if that’s even possible — have you read this thread written by alot of folks who weren’t there and by definition don’t know what happened?) The sheep continue to be SOOOOOO easily manipulated by the media. I see you learned nothing from the Casey debacle. (pretty sure she was guilty, but absolutely the right verdict given the nearly complete lack of real evidence).
