Iran has been threatening Israel, the US, etc., right along, because as a practical matter, that’s all Iran can do. She can’t launch a war against Israel/US And hope to win it, and she knows that. What she is trying to do is attain nuclear parity with Israel, to dissuade Israel/US from launching a war against her–just as Israel would be doing right now if their positions were reversed.

Israel has nukes, (by the way it is against US law to provide aid to any country that hasn’t signed the Nuclear Profileration Agreement)and the US provides both money and military aid to Israel. If we look back in history, was it not the US the only country to use a Nuke or two?

It is very unfortunate that Reuters allows these warmongering misrepresentations of what Iran and Ahmadinejad say into their reporting. It certainly reveals their strong biases, or even outright lying on Iran. Definitely, little of what they say or Iran is to be trusted.

Below is what is given in Wikepdia on the “wipe Israel of the face of the map”. First thing to note is that there is no such idiom in Farsi. Are we to believe that General Hadizadeh was speaking english? Seems very unlikely! Therefore, Reuters has made this up, or accepted this quote from somebody else who made it up.

Secondly, Reuters quotes Ahmadinejad as saying: Israel “must be wiped off the page of time”, sounding like a threat; rather, he said that the Zionist regime will “vanish from the pages of time”, a prediction. In fact, many people in the West agree that the Zionist regime will disappear. That is just what all the Zionists are so upset about: their precious racist apartheid project will fail Such failure is a very real and hopeful possibility, and the only reasonable way the Middle East will ever by at peace. And what would this mean? Israel would become a non-aparthied state, just as happened in South Africa. Since the two-state solution is just another red herring floated by the Zionists, the outcome will be that Israel-Palestine will become one state with equal rights for all Jews, Christians and Muslims. Those Jews who can’t stand living with Arabs, or for other reasons, will simply go elsewhere. Indeed, many already are leaving.

From wikipedia: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Israel
The translation presented by the official Islamic Republic News Agency has been challenged by Arash Norouzi, who says the statement “wiped off the map” was never made and that Ahmadinejad did not refer to the nation or land mass of Israel, but to the “regime occupying Jerusalem”. Norouzi translated the original Persian to English, with the result, “the Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.”[14] Juan Cole, a University of Michigan Professor of Modern Middle East and South Asian History, agrees that Ahmadinejad’s statement should be translated as, “the Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad).”[15] According to Cole, “Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to ‘wipe Israel off the map’ because no such idiom exists in Persian.” Instead, “he did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse.”[16]

Israel is very well aware that economic sanctions against Iran will fail because Iran’s concerns are ideological. Of course, so are those of Israel. The agenda of the Likud government is the same as that of the late prime minister Shamir: that is an Israeli state that extends from the Mediterranean to the Jordan river with all the majority indigenous people of the region transferred to adjoining territories.

The agenda of the Netanyahu government is to persuade America to attack Iran. This is being prosecuted by the Israeli lobby in the US and by the right-wing of the Republican Party. The consequential loss of life and the possibility of a nuclear war is dismissed as immaterial to the ’cause’. The economic cost to the American public in the doubling or trebling of gas prices and the effect of that on jobs and living costs, is dismissed.

Jul 01, 2012 9:24pm EDT  --  Report as abuse

It’s a mock threat by Iran. The confirmation of Israelis nuclear weapons recently and their presence on submarines that can’t be taken out insures second strike capacity. If Iran tried to carry out their threat, they would have to evacuate their cities first, and they know it. Also, since Iran bluffed it’s threat to close the strait of Hormuz, their threats are now irrelevant except as a convenient excuse to attack them.

As the media’s headline ‘framing’ of this issue in this particular article clearly demonstrates, the media comfortably accept it as a given that it would now be certainly okay if rogue nuclear power Israel and/or the U.S. attacked the Islamic Republic should that peaceful nation pursue its legal rights under the non-proliferation treaty it has signed (and honored), even though there is no legitimate international law or precedent available to justify doing so. Moreover, both Washington and rogue nuclear proliferator Israel further artfully assert that it would not be justifiable, or appropriate, or understandable, if Iran responded in kind to such blatant aggression. Article 2(4) of the UN Charter expressly prohibits the threat to use aggressive force as well as the actual use of force – threats that both Washington and Israel routinely make against Iran. And when U.S. officials, from Obama on down, repeat the mantra that “everything is on the table,” including the “military option,” a clear violation of the UN Charter, no one here seems bothered by that fact. Bottom line: International law is, as Washington and Israel say, “not a problem.”

I am so glad we continue to have an over abundance of Military, and Middle Eastern experts here to draw from their vast experience in these matters. Perhaps there is a possibility that from this pool of knowledge we can also solve all of the problems this planet faces. Mankind is inherently flawed. The one thing that cause everything that mankind does to fail is the human factor. Face it as a race we are flawed. A perfect government could never work because it would require Humans in the equation. Eventually we will get it right, but until then we just keep on blaming others for our flaws and prove it by destroying them. I pity those who assume to be superior, for they will be the instrument of there own demise. Humility and compassion is part of the true path to perfection, but not the entire journey. I do not claim to have all the answers, but I do see some of the flaws.

@ghost62,
Yes all you have to do is look in the mirror to see the flaws, and try to be a better (whatever), man, person, tomorrow, than today.
You are not in competition with anyone else, just you self. If you see no room for improvement you failed, start at square one again.

When are you guys going to get off this ridiculous bandwagon and stop worrying about what someone may or may not have said in 2005? It was just a quotation from Khomeini anyway.

If you are so hung up on this issue, as I told someone else, read a document called “The Rumor of the Century” and just shut up about this issue.

As for slogans of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” have you heard of freedom of speech? In Iran, it is a tradition to call for the death of anything they don’t like, even for inanimate objects. Do you have a problem with that? You are going to bomb them for just some words? If I called you “stupid,” are you going to shoot me?

From next door Pakistan. Pak just needs some money. Iran has lots of it. So why should Iran not confront the west ?

In fact it is this reason why the west has not attacked Iran till now. Nor ever. America/Israel would have attacked Iran long ago if the guys did not have the bomb. Just wait and see – if any attack happens, they might – quite possible – test ten bombs and become a powerful nation. The west will have to back off. Period.

The writing is on the wall. Would you too not want to arm yourself against a lethally armed country with the USA as it’s ally and use big talk if you get attacked.

There is not doubt in my mind that no matter what Iran does or says – the will be attacked in 2012 by the USA and Israel. Nuclear program or not. Iran is smart enough to get sucked in by all the espionage. Time is ticking and money and bets are being wasted. We will see a dirty bomb on the USA soil to fast-track the IRAN war. No fingerprints this time.
