Nuclear power champions Japan and France turn away

Nuclear power never made any sense. Of course, there have been the problems with radioactive waste disposal (never solved so far), proliferation fears, meltdowns, and power generation inflexibility (nuclear is base-load and cannot be ramped up or down quickly). For most utilities, though, the really big problem was and is the economics. Huge cost overruns in the 1970′s killed nuclear well before Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. The “nuclear renaissance” of the past decade collapsed before Fukushima when utilities rediscovered how really expensive nuclear is. The future is with renewables, which continue to fall in price. After decades of misguided policy, Japan and France have finally got it right.
