The article says, ‘”If not, why not contemplate also freely chosen polygamy and, of course, not to discriminate, polyandry?” he said.”’

Is that an argument against homosexual marriages? Some might say why not polygamy?

One wishes that Christian denominations would clarify why homosexual marriages are contrary to civilization, and it has to do with the primary purpose for marriage: the rearing of children.

Children need the 24/7/365 psychological bombardment that only heterosexual marriages offer to (1) learn how the sexes are to behave towards one another; and (2) encourage children to want to associate with the opposite sex, and marry the opposite sex to raise children.

Civilization has a duty to encourage the integration of the sexes, not the segregation of the sexes, hence homosexual marriages are contrary to civilization. These are the points that Christian denominations should be making.

The Catholic church should get it’s own house in order before telling everyone else what is right! They have been proved, throughout history, to be wrong, corrupt and rife with pedophilia!
Who gives them the right to interfere in what others see as their rights. The idiotic statement “the sentinels of religious freedom” , where is there any freedom in any religion?

Response: Firstly, if the Vatican is right, then why doesn’t the Vatican explain why homosexual marriage is contrary to civilization? Secondly, do you ascribe to the proposition that homosexual marriage is not contrary to civilization? Thirdly, your observation that the “Catholic church should get it’s own house in order” is more correct than I suspect you know.

Question for you: Would Believers in God knowingly subject children to sexual predators, especially when such predation wasn’t necessary? The offending priest could have been assigned to duties that didn’t involve children, yet for the past 50 years the Vatican chose to massively compound the the crimes committed by each offending priest by passing that priest to another parish. Does that make sense? Why would the Vatican set itself up for a future fall that was bound to come with such a ludicrous policy? Not to mention, the Vatican officials who prescribed such a policy would go to Hell for prescribing such a policy! Are you beginning to notice something odd about the Vatican now?

@DeanMJackson I suppose you’re suggesting that the Vatican has some kind of “long range strategy” also and it’s demise is some kind of clever ruse to lull people into a false sense of security, so it can take over the world while we have our guards down. At least for once you’ve posted something here using your own words rather than just copying and pasting, although it wouldn’t surprise me if your views are once again derived from some conspiracy theory book you read. Has it never occured to you that most of the time the simplest explanation is the most likely one?

The reason there are so many pedophiles in the catholic church is because priests have a lot of access to children, and catholics are taught to respect the authority of the church and not to question a priest’s morals, so naturally it’s a very attractive career path for those who want to prey on children. Pedophiles become teachers, sports coaches, paediatricians and scout leaders for the same reason. In response to your question on why suspected pedophiles in the church aren’t simply moved to a position that doesn’t involve children, in many cases they are, but there aren’t all that many positions for a priest that don’t involve access to children, and I think the vatican’s first priority in any of these cases is to get the offending priest as far away from the scandal as possible, regardless of the potential consequences. The fatal flaw they make is to assume that if a priest has been discovered and disciplined once, then they won’t be stupid enough to make the same mistake twice. You asked why religious people would knowingly do something that in their minds would lead them to hell. Some religious people, particularly those in positions of power, are prepared to do what they perceive as a little evil for the greater good. The crusades are a classic example of this. Also, one of the handy things about christianity in all its forms is that you can be forgiven for any sin so long as you repent before you die. One theory about why the emperor Constantine converted to christianity is that it was the only religion that would offer forgiveness for some of his more despicable deeds.

My opinion on homosexuality’s place in civilisation is this; there are way too many humans on the planet as things stand and the number continues to grow exponentially, and pretty much all the world’s problems are largely down to overpopulation. Since gay people generally don’t procreate, I see homosexuality as being largely beneficial to the planet. In the context of the ancient world from which most religions derive, when war, disease and famine took out a much larger percentage of the population than they do today, it is understandable why those in authority had an interest in getting people to have as many children as possible. Unfortunately religious leaders don’t seem to realise this and keep pushing the line that homosexuality is wrong simply because their respective holy books say so, without understanding the reasoning behind it. The obsession national governments and business leaders have with creating “growth” at all costs doesn’t help the situation either.

If only the Vatican realised how few catholics actually agree with their views on issues such as homosexuality, women priests, contraception and papal infallibality, then it might finally get off its pedestal and move into the 21st century. Considering their talent for self-delusion however, I won’t hold my breath

@fromthecenter The reason the catholic church doesn’t allow priests to marry dates back to the middle ages, when pope Gregory VII introduced the rule so the church could retain all lands granted to it by secular rulers, rather than it being inherited by their children as had been the case before. It was merely a land grab and morality had nothing to do with it
