Protectionism works, apparently. China needs us more than we need them. Any poor country can host a low-wage factory now. Even Guatemala and Sri Lanka have gotten in on that gig. But not any country can spend a trillion dollars on gadgets and crap each year, and keep the customers lining up for more. Only America and a handful of other wealthy nations provide markets like that. Raise the tariffs against China, charge for access to our markets. That gives us direct revenue to pay down the deficit, and it incentivizes more domestic production here in the U.S.

What China doesn’t make, Guatemala will. Or we will.
