Yes, in its marketing sense it is indeed an old ploy to bring customers into stores, but I feel sorry for the gullible consumer who feels he/she is otherwise inapt in enjoying holidays. The very spirit of holidays, especially Christmas, is lost in this shopping frenzy, provoked by retailers in these “results of independent studies” articles. There are then those astute shoppers who dealt an “unexpected” blow to sale predictions at the end of the holiday season, that these same retail forecasters said, “they couldn’t understand how this happened”. Today’s consumer is a whole lot smarter than the retailers give credit for.
