Obama health law to face religion-based challenge
Liberty University isn’t a real school, it’s an organization used to advance the agenda of small minded bigots.
I would never hire someone “educated” at one of these places.
@Eideard – so the organization doesn’t have a right to be heard?
The Supreme Court did what it should have done. The appeals court ruled it lacked jurisdiction due to the federal Anti-Injunction Act. The lawsuit however was based on First Amendment protections which the lower court apparently didn’t consider, so now they have been instructed to do so. An example of the Supreme Court upholding the First Amendment legal protections we enjoy, not particularly a “conservative” or “liberal” act.

now we have CINOs–christian in name only who begrudge some 40 million fellow citizens a chance to have some healthcare coverage.
Eideard, whysenhymer and especially googlemcgoogle haven’t read the ACA. The ACA is an open ended law with over 40% of it yet to be written via regulations and new laws to be written by the Sec. of Health. Nancy Pelosi was right when she stated that we wouldn’t know what is in the bill until it is passed. It’s passed and we are still learning what is in it and will continue to learn more as long as it exists because there is no end to the laws that can be written in it. Additionally, the effects of the modifications made to existing law is yet to be felt.
Yes get rid of it please.
Instead let’s focus on getting control out of the hands of the insurance and drug industries.
Obama advocates refuse to see his failure and the details of his compromises to the aforementioned industries. More insurance doesn’t mean more or better healthcare. He took drug importation off the table as well at the behest of the pharmaceutical lobby.
Just give them a waiver and tell ‘em to shut up.
Give your money to a private, for profit insurance corporation or be labelled a criminal…obamacare in a nutshell. How that is not perceived by the lefties as socialism is beyond me. Forcing a citizen by law to give money to a insurance corporation for what is literally ‘protection money’ is NOT freedom by any stretch.
What if the citizen is a republican and the insurance company supports only democratic candidates? Or vice versa?!? You know, like the unionist do. What if the citizen is morally or religiously opposed to paying for abortions or birth control? By what authority does the government force people to pay for these things diametrically opposed to their nature and belief? Freedom? Democracy? Neither matter today as the left feels more than justified in speaking for everyone.
Obamacare is a failure. Scrap it and implement a blueprint of Canada’s health care system. We did this in the 60′s before; it’s called Medicaid. Americans can’t afford privatized health care any longer…period.
Besides, most of our country is under a government health care system of one type or another already: Military, Low-Income, Disabled, and Politicians.
Lastly, consider what a boon this would be to businesses large and small, if they didn’t have the cost of providing health care directly to employees…= more jobs!
Let the conservatives drive a nail in their foot again and again
Good, I hope ‘Liberty University’ wastes a good bunch of money on this frivolous lawsuit. They will be able to show no damages because they are not being damaged. They are basically suing because they don’t like the law. And if that was enough to win, we wouldn’t have taxes or speed limits. Because some people don’t like them :)
I hope their lawyers bill at $600 an hour and this this lawsuit takes 7 years. Liberty University, I’m downgrading your score as a competent institution.
I fail to see how this in any way affects ‘Freedom of Religion’. They still have the right to practice their antiquated beliefs. More and more Americans are seeing that religion has ideals that are just not practical in today’s society. Women and men should have the human right to do whatever they want with their bodies. It ain’t ‘alive’ until it screams anyway. Maybe if we take a few cents of every dollar a theist spends on mandated healthcare and apply it to AIDS research, instead of abortion……would that make them go away?
Maybe the Amish will sue next, since part of their individual income tax goes to fund highway maintenance, electric lights at federal office buildings…. and military equipment wich is not horse-drawn. “It’s against our religion to fund such evil and menacing things.”
Good times. Liberty University is a sell.
“Women and men should have the human right to do whatever they want with their bodies.”
Until it comes to thinking – then the “left” will do that for you.
Liberty University appears in court, wearing a neck brace.
“Your honor, the pain and suffering are indescribable. We have not been able to get out of bed for 4 years.”
Another 15 – 20 years and there probably won’t be enough conservtives left to continue hijacking religion as an excuse to “rule the ignorant masses” — hopefully . . like we can’t think for ourselves.
My religion prevents me from spending federal tax dollars on Halliburton’s no-bid contracts, in trumped-up wars that yield no benefit to the United States. Says it right there in Facebook scripture. Verse 9 of the Chapter entitled “The dumbest thing we ever did as a country.”
I’ll let you know how the court rules on my religion-based case. If I win, I’m buying everyone pizza and beer.
This is the platform of the Republican Party, as well as institutions like Liberty University. Paul Ryan’s personhood bill which propelled the right to life platform that states a fertilizes egg is a person with property rights and one could be charged with murder if you the mother or a doctor was responsible for the death of that fertilized egg. This could potentially outlaw certain types of birth control pills that keep the egg from attaching to the uterus. If they got their way, we would only have condoms. Better yet, practice abstinence unless you plan on having children!
“Women and men should have the human right to believe whatever they want.”
Until it comes to thinking – then the “light wing” will do that for you, through the pulpit.
This is a bullshit shot in the dark. If you are a pacifist who belongs to a religion of pacifists, that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to not pay taxes, some of which go to the military and police.
The same goes for the Affordable Health Care Act.
If your business must abide by the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, which forbids discrimination in hiring on religious grounds for most businesses, there are NO grounds for the business to be exempted from the Affordable Care Act.
It doesn’t matter if your family business is based on ‘Christian’ values or not; if you must abide by the EEO, you must comply with the ACA.
And the ‘taxpayer funding’ argument is invalid on the face of it; people who are pacifists and follow a pacifist religion must still pay taxes, some of which go to the military and police.
@soulice
Heard yes, but not listened too
Burns0011 is commenting on apples and oranges. The ACA mandates that insurance companies provide free birth control. Two points, 1) the ACA is forcing a company to give something away for free. The government has no right to force Americans or any American company to give something away for free. 2) If the business is religious owned it is covered under the 1st Amendment protections. This is the case that is currently being litigated by the Catholic church. In addition, Stambo2001 makes an interesting point with regard to what the government can force a citizen to do. Despite Chief Justice Robert’s convoluted opinion concerning the penalty for not purchasing ACA mandated insurance it does not mention what type of coverage a person has to buy. In short, Justice Robert’s left the door open to challenges, based on religious grounds, with regard to purchasing insurance that provides contraceptives for free. Since the ACA requires that everyone purchase insurance with government mandated coverage that includes free contraceptives, then it can come into conflict with a person or companies religious beliefs. This is what is currently going through the courts. Burns0011 is correct that despite religious beliefs one must abide by the EEO. Burns0011 is also correct with regard to the taxpayer funding argument because that involves the 16 Amendment with regard to taxes but that only involves taxes on income not as a penalty. This is where Justice Roberts argument becomes convoluted and why SCOTUS should be rendering their decisions based on the Constitution not on precedence.
