In Israel, some rebel against circumcision

Studies show that circumcision causes significant pain and trauma, behavioral and neurological changes in infants, potential parental stress from persistent crying (colic) of infants, disrupted bonding between parent and child, and risk of surgical complications. Other consequences of circumcision include loss of a natural, healthy, functioning body part, reduced sexual pleasure, potential psychological problems, and unknown negative effects that have not been studied.

Some circumcised men resent that they are circumcised. Sexual anxieties, reduced emotional expression, low self-esteem, avoidance of intimacy, and depression are also reported. Some doctors refuse to perform circumcisions because of ethical reasons. Relying on presumed authorities (e.g., American Academy of Pediatrics or doctors who echo AAP views) is not sufficient because of personal, religious, financial, and political conflicts of interest.

minorityview: I find it amusing that in one paragraph you talk about all sorts of negatives that have mostly not been studied scientifically, then in the next go on to criticize organizations whose statements on medical matters are largely based on scientific research, claiming religious/political conspiracy.

One major problem preventing a realistic dialog about circumcision is that it is such a charged issue that most of the material readily available in opposition is blatantly incorrect. Another major problem is that most of the support is religious.

Any body out there ever seen any porn? Not only is circumcision almost universal among male porn models and actors — I’m guessing because it seen as more attractive or even more erotic compared to a covering of foreskin — but it clearly has no impact on their energies or talents. I put aside entirely something as basic from a Jewish perspective as that it represents the most ancient possible and life-permanent connection with identity — something past generations have died for. But in the generations since circumcision became common among Christians (at least in America), how can anyone pretend that open sexuality and the embrace of sexual pleasure have not exploded compared to times before? Don’t circumcise if you don’t want to, but spare the pseudo-science.

To be frank, I guess many people just don’t care about circumcision. I don’t. All the pros and cons are minor indeed.

I can understand how some people might be against the procedure, but don’t cite scientific or medical reasons as a justification. There are innumerable medical benefits and nearly no dangers.
Adult men regretting the procedure? I’m sure it happens. Enough to be statistically relevant? Not even close.

I also don’t like the idea of Jews skipping out on the procedure. I think it’s important on an ancient level, if for no other reason than culturally.

Parents make many choices, aside from circumcision, that have a major effect on the lives of baby boys…and the babies are never asked. What’s most important though, is that parents always have the option to do as they see fit.

That was a very biased article. It would only be like cutting of a finger if they cut the penis off. Instead they just cut off some of the skin. If you don’t want to do it to your child that is fine I don’t care but your not maiming them anymore than if you have their ears pierced. I am not Jewish but I am confused how you can be anything but a non practicing Jew without circumcision. The Bible is pretty clear on this one just like it is on not working on the Sabbath. I guess a lot of Christians pretend like that is not clear either.

Circumcision is good for a man.
I don’t know the details but it is not dangerous.
