Brilliant move Wal-Mart! Hire employees with federal VA health care, get bigger tax breaks, and continue to screw this nation blind. Let me join Mrs. Obama in congratulating us all on pushing the standard of living as low as we possibly can.

One wonders how much this has to do with the Mexican Bribery scandle?

Buying US made goods provides jobs here in America and promotes needed growth. Hiring veterans is a strong commitment to the men and woman who serve our country. These are positive moves by Walmart and should be recognized as such.
Well done!

The unemployment rate among veterans is a disgrace. The number of veterans among the homeless is estimated at 25%. So Wal Mart will hope to hire 20,000 per year for five years.

They want honorably discharged veterans only. Well, that is not unreasonable. But they also will only pledge to hire a veteran within 12 months of being discharged from active duty. That will really narrow down the pool of applicants.

Just think to a veteran who gained all those ‘skills’ promised by the recruiters, they may be able to qualify as a Wal Mart greeter after not being able to find a job upon discharge, provided they didn’t wait too long. And be sure to bring their VA medical benefits along with them, since they probably won’t get any health coverage from Wal Mart.

I wonder if they will spend more money hyping the PR on hiring veterans then they will in actually paying veterans they hired?

Years ago – there was this company called “Wal-Mart” – Sam Walton ran it.

The concept was to buy almost all American made goods, provide decent jobs with good benefits to Americans as well.

I recall my brother worked there when Sam was running it – and it was one of the best ‘un-skilled’ jobs a person could get.

Now, most everything is made in China there and when you refer to ‘bad jobs’ – Wal-Mart easily comes to mind as one of them.

Sorry Wal-Mart, I think you’ve already done the damage…

Raise the tariffs back up to where they were.

China charges us 20% on goods we try to send there. We now charge them 1.3%

Why?

Absolutely no upturn in manufacturing or any hiring in the U.S. will ever translate to improved employment. We have open borders, remember? If jobs ever start to open up a new flood of foreign nationals will pour in to undercut the market like they have always done in the last 30 years. Workers in the U.S. will remain valueless.

As long as everyone votes Democrat it’s okay, though, right?

@ AlkalineState… I could not agree more… add tariff to even out the playing field…

but then most large companies, who have bought the gov, would face lower profits, so they make sure it does not happen. Until our gov is no longer corrupt, we won’t see this happen

I have NOT shopped at Walmart for many years because of poor quality foreign-made crap they stock. If they DO go to better quality American made products, I may have to reconsider shopping there.

GA_Chris and AlkalineState, I also agree, having spent most of 5 years+ in China dealing with our imports into China from the USA through Chinese Customs.

However, the problem is that the Chinese economy is totally controlled by the Chinese government and skewed towards a never-ending export led increase in income (Foreign Exchange reserves) from other countries.

The second problem is that this is supported by BOTH Democrats AND Republicans AND also by big business in the USA since they are either directly involved or invested in profit schemes that are based on the artificially lower value Chinese Renminbi (currency).

Whether you like Mitt Romney or not, declaring China a currency manipulator is a good first step, though neither he nor Obama would ever actually watch out for the economic interests of the average American citizen as long as it conflicts with their own profit generating systems.

So this is Walmart’s response to all the recent negative publicity regarding their sub-standard wages, and practices that deny nearly all their employees from qualifying for health care? Nice try, but no deal! 50 billion dollars in American made good over 10 years, is a drop in the bucket compared to corporate profits. And oh boy, 100,000 vets will be hired for crappy low paying jobs over the next 5 years, lucky them! This is just Walmart’s way of hiring employees that have government health care so they don’t have to provide it. Until Walmart allows workers to organize, starts paying them living wages, and offering decent benefits they will not see ONE PENNY OF MY MONEY!

If they don’t start to support the US economy meaningfully, they will eventually kill the goose. Have they finallly realised if they do that, they will not be able to just move overseas as easily as they once thought? Anyway, the only person posting that this is a bad idea, is the Chinese nationalist. If a Chinese nationalist is not happy, then it is most likely a great idea.
