The main challenges are massive corruption, massive bad debt, and no effective mechanisms in place to deal with either.
The result is massive, growing discontentment in the population, even among the elites whose members frequently choose to migrate to other countries such as Canada and the United States.
The Chinese leadership might choose to increase tensions with its neighbors in order to divert the people’s attention from internal problems. This could very well backfire in the form of regional boycotts on doing business with China, and foreign divestment in the Chinese economy.
Nothing will get solved for real without transparency, accountability, and a solid, functioning democratic system. Anything else is a third-world style charade on an unprecedented scale.
