American was the first major carrier to have bag fees.

Some observed that the move drove away passengers, many of whom will never forget who it was that started the hated nickle & diming. And the increase in carry-ons makes it take longer to load and unload a plane.

Extra fees didn’t save American or its “management” team.

Schadenfreude wins in the end.

How much success can Doug Parker claim for past airline mergers he has orchestrated when America West and US Airways employees have yet to be integrated?

The culmination of 30-plus years of airline deregulation (thanks to the demi-God Reagan)which was supposed to be a triumph for the efficient free market system, competition, cheaper airfares, has resulted in a virtual monopoly of the big carriers who can control volume, fix rates, reduce service to ordinary passengers and compete for the high-margin corporate business-class market. Wouldn’t it be easier if in the land of the free and the brave we only had one airline that controlled everything – you wouldn’t need Orbitz.
