As a result of 30 years of open-up policy, about one third of China’s 1.3 billion people in the eastern coastal region become rich. Foreseeing the non-sustainability in depending solely on export, China has in fact started to develop the central and western regions 10 to 15 years ago. Nowadays people in the central and western regions are becoming richer and thus having more purchasing power, the trend is moving forward. THis is China’s only way out to boosting domestic demand.

Japan has an export driven economy. Its North American and European markets are saturated already and is at the downturn now. For keeping the momentum, Japan has not much choice but to try to export more to China at present and in the long run. TPP is just Obama’s dream to isolate China, but the USA has to rely on China for its recovery at least for the time being. For immediate and long term economic benefits, Abe should try to mend relationship with China.

Roll on Pacific intergration. To the benefit of us all. More needs to be done on the free movement of people, although that is something normally done bilaterally, it would be heartening to see a regional effort. There is certainly plenty of co-operation to build on.
