Merkel tells Putin Germany wants looted art returned

Germans protesting Soviet theft of German art certainly is the pot calling the kettle black. The Third Reich’s Goering was the biggest art thief (not to mention the most obese). Finally, the shoe is on the other foot.

And, yes, we /are/ actively repatriating art, only the provenance has to be reasonably shown so that we don’t get a bunch of wannabee owners, all claiming the same thing and suing us if we gave it to the wrong guy.

The art the russians took was never part or the war reparations.

No way Germany gets to complain about anything taken out of their country following WWII. The fact any of them were allowed to live speaks volumes about the kindness of their conquerors.

Certainly the Soviets did not treat them with kid gloves, and what they did to the women is not defensible. Having said that, if the Soviets, Americans, Brits or most certainly the French had taken every single item in their sector home with them and left the German people there naked and starving, they certainly had the right, given what Germany had inflicted on the world in the prior half decade.

While I respect Angela Merkel to a great degree, she is simply barking up the wrong tree here. The Germans have certainly shown that sitting around complaining about being victimized is not the way to prosperity. They have certainly gained back some piece of the world’s respect in the last 60 years. But no, they should not now ask for their stuff back. Their stuff is that which they’ve made since the war, nothing else.

If I’m not mistaken, the way it works is that you have to go and kick their butts and take your stuff back. If you can’t do that, it’s not your stuff. At least it’s worked that way for a few million years. Did someone change the rules and not tell me?

Deals are so complicated across borders. Nobody will read this, but why not determine which pieces are highly unlikely to be displayed, and Germany can trade some raw materials for Russian artists to develop new artifacts? But, I’m just a regular person, nobody would consider these types of ideas anyway..

The Germans haven’t given back all the art they stole from the Jews during the war.

LOL so the greatest looters in modern history are complaining about rightful revenge by way of theft on behalf of the Soviets. Give me a break. The Germans should still be living amongst the rubble of their destroyed cities for their grandparents’ actions a mere 70 years ago.
