We spent trillions of dollars and ended the lives of hundreds of thousands of people because Saddam Hussein was killing Iraqis, yet more Iraqis have died since our initials invasion than during the ten years prior to our invasion. We hunted Saddam down and saw him hanged, but Bush does worse and no one says a word. He duped the country into supporting a war that did worse damage than Saddam did and no one calls for even an investigation, yet Republicans have talked about impeaching Obama for Benghazi, where 4 people were killed for something that had nothing to do with Obama. Why do people allow themselves to buy into this line of thinking? Stop the insanity.

Are they practicing for the Olympics? I didn’t know car bombing was a sanctioned event. Seriously, what a sick culture. So incredibly sad this country and it’s intelligence gathering machine got us into those two multi trillion dollar wars with 4,500 dead Americans and they won’t say how many amputees. Real damn sad. As a Vietnam veteran it makes it hard to want to remember what they have done. There are so many parallels to what DC did to the American people in Vietnam. DaJaVue all over again.

Lowell: Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize is meaningless. It was nothing more than the world sharing in a collective sigh that George W. Bush is no longer President. But Obama didn’t do anything to earn it. But at least that meaningless Nobel Prize didn’t cost anyone their lives. Am I still blaming Bush? When does the statute of limitations run out on responsibility? You tell me. It was a stupid thing to do and no one was held responsible. We’re still paying for it, so it only makes sense to still blame Bush, no?

Vuenbelvue: I’ve been researching the Vietnam War, learning a lot of things I didn’t know. I turned 18 shortly after the war ended. And, yes, a lot of the same stupid decision making and lies that are associated with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars took place with the Vietnam War. Our soldiers demonstrated to the world that they were the best. Too bad they didn’t have very good civilian leadership. Like with Iraq, to much politics and input from our military-industrial complex. But a heart felt “thank you” from me. I think most of the people do appreciate the sacrifices made by our soldiers. As for our leadership, they seem to be too busy serving themselves.

Just finished a book called Unfortunate Sons by L.D. James about the ambush at Hoc Mon bridge. Excellent book.

Flashrooster, you seem to say that the world would be better off w/ Saddam Hussein in power. I’d say over 100,000 dead and many nerve gassed Kurds might disagree. I’m not saying this is better, there will be no solution to the nation (loosely used word) of Kurds, Sunni and Shia that Britain cobbled together after WWII. There will never be a unified nation in Iraq, blaming any politician is useless as noone will ever fix the situation there. Far better to divide up the land and resources and give each group its own turf. Hard to say that the world is not better off w/o Saddam though.

Yah know. Messing in any civil war is just plain stupid, no matter how much justification is touted. Yes, Bush was stupid and Obama was stupid to follow along the same path. The real stupidity is in the Congress where they allowed these wars to start and drag on. All you have to do is read history to know that wars sap the strength of the participants. Might be a good idea to let people fight their own battles.

No. What I’m saying is that the price that was paid to force Saddam out of power was not worth it. You say that the 100,000 dead would disagree. There were a lot more than that killed BECAUSE of the war. Some estimates are as high as 1 million Iraqi people, not to mention 4,500 of our own soldiers. (http://www.fair.org/blog/2013/06/07/how-many-iraqis-died-in-the-iraq-war/) Most estimates are at least several hundred thousand. And the cost to tax payers for both the Iraq and the Afghan wars could ultimately be has high as $6 trillion. (http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-03-28/world/38097452_1_iraq-price-tag-first-gulf-war-veterans). Then there’s the issue of the harm done to US credibility. We’ve also managed to empower Iran, a country that poses an even greater threat than Iraq did, which really didn’t pose much of a threat at all.

So, yes, it’s extremely important that we, as a people, understand exactly what went on, how it happened, and why. We also need to hold those who did this responsible. If we can investigate a sitting President for allegedly getting a blow job, then certainly we can investigate Bush for lying to us in order to get us to back his war. If we don’t do these things we are doomed to repeat this mistake, and we can’t afford to do that. What did we get for that sacrifice? How much better off is our country for the sacrifice of all those lives and all that money?

And yet Republicans don’t want to spend money on healthcare for Americans, or more for education. They want to cut food stamps for the poor. Do you realize we’re just about the only major developed nation that doesn’t have high speed rail? Republicans say we can’t afford it. China has it, as do the Russians, the French, the Japanese, the Germans, the Brits, the Swiss, and many other countries. Even the African nations of Algeria and Morocco are building high speed rail. We used to be the world leaders in these kinds of things. Yet it’s okay to squander trillions on an unnecessary war with Iraq and nation building in Afghanistan? Those are some pretty screwed up priorities that are not helping this country at all.

So you think the cost in lives and treasure were worth it?
