Afghan Taliban attack in Kabul throws peace talks into further doubt
Where is Sork Razil when you need him?
So much for those peace talks.
Since when do they refer to themselves as “suicide bombers” in text messages? This sounds like a completely invented load of horse____. Try using that incredible imagination to fill in that blank guys.
how can anyone negotiate with a group that kills young girls for wanting an education?
Thanks, Obama!
Good job 90 minutes shooting against 5 men team makes you wonder what will happen against 50…
This is all predictable, it isn’t called the Graveyard of Empires for nothing. Shame on the West Pointers and DOD in general for lying to each other and our political dirtbags about how do-able this “limited” war was. If they didn’t lie then they were just plain stupid. We should probably just have nuked the place after 9/11 and turned the whole landscape into glass. That would have made a lot more sense, Pakistan too. Save a ton of money and blood along the way.
Wait… Why should this derail peace talks anymore than continued ISAF and CIA operations against the Taliban do?
I don’t believe the Taliban want peace. The Qatar office was a ruse to acquire legitimacy as “the Afghan government in exile.” This isn’t something I knew from the start. But, once they raised their own flag and put related signage on the entrance and inside the building, it became obvious. Regrettably, the war in Afghanistan has been a failure. Not only is the Taliban in Afghanistan poised to incite a full blown revolution once US forces are gone in order to return sharia and another attempt at a fundamental Islamic caliphate, but, Pakistan (and the ISI) are no longer under the dominion of the Pakistani army and will be a destabilized mess, themselves, at a minimum.
We should hand out lots of guns to the common people so they have personal protection. Those Taliban will think twice if the people might shoot back. Works for us.
What sort of meaningful talks can anyone have with these Islamic snakes – especially after Obama, the supreme strategist, announces that we’re pulling out in 2014?
The Obama administration is a joke and it appears the world has figured that out even if the Democrats have not.
If you want to provide a great good for your readers, conduct research and compare the Paris Peace Negotiations, to end our Vietnam War, with the ongoing push for negotiations between the US and the Taliban. I believe you will find great similarities. In each, the US was suffering a strategic defeat at the hands of a third world force; in each, the US government and its people had tired of war and long since forgotten the lofty goals established by the administration that took us to war. During the Paris Peace Negotiations, the Viet Cong’s political arm was recognized as a legitimate entity; in the upcoming Afghanistan Peace Negotiations, the Taliban (vilified by the Bush Administration and driven from Kabul by US forces) will be recognized as a legitimate political entity with whom the US will negotiate. In each, the US had to strong-arm its ally to accept the negotiations and, more importantly, to accept the terms to which we (the US) agreed with our enemy.
Lastly, you should also explain to your readership that when G.W. Bush ordered the invasion of Afghanistan (and Iraq) and the unseating of its government, the US assumed responsibility for governing and securing Afghanistan until the Afghan are capable of doing so themselves. That responsibility is recognized in international convention to which the US is signatory. It is a matter of, as Colin Powell supposedly told G. W. Bush, ‘if you break it, you buy it’. That obligation is not mitigated or voided just because we tire of war. We have not governed Afghanistan nor have we secured Afghanistan from domestic or external threat, and the Afghans certainly are not even remotely capable of governing or securing the nation.
Good post bald1.
Limited objective military actions do not achieve any permanence as this Viet vet knows.
Winning means hammering the enemy until it is defeated – not chased over the range of mountains from whence they can regroup & return.
