After Obama killed bin Laden, al Zawahiri stopped blowing up shoes and underwear on airliners and moved al Qaeda into position to hit the oil and gas infrastructure of north Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Middle East. This attack fits al Qaeda’s strategy and the group is fighting against Assad, so such an attack should be expected. In addition, attacks on oil and gas in the Middle East help keep prices high, so citizens in Arab oil and gas providers can send more money to al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other islamic rebels. In addition, the economies and militaries of the US and NATO depend on oil and gas. This attack lets islamic insurgents damage Assad, damage the economies and militaries of the US and NATO, kill and maim US and NATO troops, and force the US and NATO to pay for both sides in the conflicts. It’s a win, win, win, win situation for al Qaeda.
