First, it was asbestos phobia, then mold phobia; now it’s shooter phobia. I think rebuilding schools that are otherwise useable — and saddling communities with astronomical debt service for decades — is insane. I live in a country of neurotics.

Perhaps I’ve lived abroad for too long, but has the plague of public shootings become such the pandemic where Americans must resign themselves to accepting this as inevitable? Solutions like “adding vestibules” may prevent tragedies like the Newton massacre, but they are palliative at best. Rather than grants for building massacre-foiling labyrinths, what I’d like to hear about is grants for researching the degeneration of America’s gun culture and how to revert the process.
