Difference between the two is that Erdogan is a democrat, he is elected by Turkish citizens as their leader and has driven the country many considered a lost cause to one of the greatest turnarounds the world has not seen in a long time.
Gulen on the other hand is not elected and is seen as keeping his own financial interests above those of the country. Gulen has been a supporter of the many different military junta’s in Turkey’s history and has kept quite while his countrymen were killing each other during the many years of chaos Turkey has been through.

Gulen knows that if he comes back to Turkey he will not be welcomed by the public and knows that he has no chance of winning any election held.
