My2Lincolns,
Because those people been living there for centuries, half of Ukraine is historical Russian land and only been artificially handed to Ukraine during the early period of USSR in the 1920′s.

Half of Ukraine is Russian land? That’s a laugh….do you know why there is a large Russian MINORITY in east Ukraine? because if you kill 6 million Ukrainians & and replace them with Russians….

Are you implying that east Ukraine was Russian and when it was “artificially” handed by the Soviets to Ukraine, there was a mass influx of Ukrainians, so much so that they overran the Russians who gave up their lands without a fight to these foreigners and meekly became the minority?

Who called who ? A temporary solution is federalization of Ukraine and then in future “Change of Heart” show can take place . Both Ukraine and Russia can compete to win the hearts of those Russians in Eastern Ukraine. The problem here is that if we can not have Ukraine neither the Russians can so lets screw it up. That’s our motto. Federalized Ukraine is not of any use to US, but whatever is going to be left of it might. So we’ll push for war …

EU and US are myopic, unable to see far enough or differentiate a short term and long term objective. Arab Spring has turned sour, and now Ukraine has gone bitter. Too bad.

The only thing I’m persuaded of by this latest development is the Europeans’ and Obama’s reluctance to impose tough sanctions. Obama believes in talking. Talk is important, but it only goes so far. Russia is paying a price in a lower stock market, lower Rouble, and an outflow of capital, but sanctions could hurt Putin and his friends way more. Big business doesn’t want them to do it, because they stand to lose. It’s time for Obama to become the commander in chief, not just a community organizer.

Dron, Ukraine is actually the older brother of Russia and the Slavic history dating back to the 9th century AD. Kyiv Rus was the first capital and Russia actually came from Ukraine, not vice versa.

Actually, most of the protesters aren’t local, but professional “instigators” sent in by Moscow to create the upheaval. Similar to what the Germans did in Austria-Hungary, Poland, etc. just before WWII.

bigturkey, you can bet if Putin made the call he had a good reason. Really, who in the world fears any of our presidents “Red Lines”. Putin will do what Putin wants to and theres not much we can do. Tough talk and Sanctions are not going to deter Russia. They are determined to keep Ukraine out of E.U. and NATO. Europe depends on Russia energy way to much to put up much of a fight. Im afraid Ukraine is on its own. Dont be too suprised when Eastern Ukraine or more of the country is part of Russia before summers end. When winter is right around the corner and all that Russian fuel is in greater demand, Ukraine will be thrown to the Russia Bear to keep the gas flowing into Europe. Its sad, but what can Europe or the NATO do about any of this?

Crimea is a peninsula and although Putin can continually resupply it via ports in the black sea, the utilities and pipelines run through eastern Ukraine. So it is only a matter of time before Putin grabs eastern Ukraine too. If Obama really wanted to do hard economic sanctions, then he would have already instituted them already over Crimea. The Crimea and soon eastern Ukraine will be Russian and Obama isn’t going to do a thing about it. Now western Ukraine is in play now.

Spot on! you’re obviously a student of history like me. And this Ukraine gambit is EXACTLY how Hitler justified taking the Sudetenland. Quite ironic.
