Do you know why we still have computers on our network with Windows XP? Simple, it’s because the users don’t want to learn to use something different. Why not? It’s because they’re busy working and taking time to look for where Microsoft decided to hide the icon for the print drivers, or some other unnecessary cosmetic change Microsoft feels users should learn to re-use is a non-starter with them.

In short, get with it Microsoft and stop trying to play ‘father knows best’. In short, leave the choice of interface up to the user! Sure, if you want to offer Metro, fine . . . but make it for users happy with the look of XP to select it when they install an OS. What’s so hard about this?

I just don’t get why Microsoft doesn’t offer us a Windows 8 experience, which looks exactly like Windows XP. I know we would immediately upgrade all our XP computers – no question.

jbeech: That’s your choice to have a security risk at your office. Windows 7 did not change that much from Windows XP. I agree if you are jumping from XP to 8 then you have a point but there’s no need to do that. Hop on 7 for another 8-10 years and worry about Windows 9 or Windows X by then.

Microsoft is just disconnected from reality. Why on earth would you willingly alienate 15-25% of the global PC market? These users, feeling burned by an arrogant MS, are now out shopping for non-MS solutions.

Should General Motors be held responsible for a faulty ignition switch in their older model automobiles? Shouldn’t General Motors customers be forced to go out and buy a new automobile that doesn’t have the faulty ignition switch problem???

Abandoning 100 million customers is a great way to loose them permanently. Having Chosen DOS over CPM in 1983, I have stuck with Microsoft and been handed a few disasters of OSs. Windows 3.1 way ok, as was 98, 200 and XP, but those in between were disasters. With such a spotty reputation, Microsoft deserves to loose most of their customers. Isn’t there someone out there to replace them?
I plan to keep XP and install Linux for external/Internet use.

Above is the decision they made after the public went berserk over Microsoft leaving approximately 25% of its customers to fend for themselves or buy a new operating system.

They should have come to the decision to “Fix it and fix it…for all our customers” from the start.

See capitalism is supposed to be based on Darwinism applied to business. Bad businesses are supposed to fail and be replaced by other businesses. That isn’t happening. The big, old dinosaur businesses are too big-to-fail. They have lawyers suing competitors. They have lobbyists in Washington getting support from government.

Microsoft should be required to support XP because apparently the program is not compatible with any later platforms and many businesses and government agencies cannot afford to rewrite their programs. Microsoft, and other BIG players who control technology, should be forced to support products they devise until they are totally obsolete. Perhaps that will make them more accountable to customers and the public.
