Oh, you are brilliant, Leahy. Just let the current government fail so Egypt will have an Islamic regime?! THAT would certainly be in the best interests of the U.S., now wouldn’t it? Who votes for people like this?

Thank you Senator Leahy for withholding the funding. The Egyptian government has become tyrannical and oppressive, regressing to its former state under the Mubarak regime. No one can condone the government and judiciary’s behavior in making mass arrests of people and journalists and in condemning to death hundreds, some as young as 18, and nearly all who did nothing other than attempt to express their political beliefs openly. These people are being executed for their political beliefs and some solely for their affiliation. Egypt is spiraling downward with Sisi, the next Mubarak, at the helm.

Even if you disagree with him, Leahy should at least be admired for sticking with his principles…

Due Process in an Egyptian court depends heavily on how influential the people being tried are. You need connections to the sitting government, and even then it’s not about justice, it’s about who knows who and who can help the judge or his family socially.

Sometimes it’s about money, too, though blatant bribery is surprisingly rare.

For the same reasons, why not to suspend ALL BILLIONS of U.S. “aid” to Israel???

What exactly are we getting for our money sent to Egypt? Nothing! We need to examine every dime in foreign aid and in each case ask the question…why? We need to get out of the Middle East period! Stop buying their oil, pull all troops and other government officials. That place is a toxic waste dump. You go Patrick! Don’t stop with Egypt!

beofaction,

Your logic is so utterly fail it’s surprising you have the gall to question a legislator such as Leahy who would dance circles around your understand of Law, Justice, and appropriations spending and when/why we should use/restrain it.

First and foremost, suspending this type of aid is not dooming the current Egyptian regime to fail. What WILL ultimately cause any regime to fail is corruption and power abuse. Even if the MB was in the wrong (and they were), sham trials with mass death sentences are not the answer.

I agree with Leahy, and would go a step further. Stop all foreign aid until we balance our budget and pay off our debt. Since that isn’t going to happen, we can at least not offer aid to governments that are actively killing off all their political opponents.

So you support the murder of hundreds of innocents without a fair trial? Also, if you think the only thing holding up the Egyptian government is the money coming from the U.S., you obviously don’t understand what is going on over there.

So, what exactly does he think is the relation between the military and a judge, so that he would delay military aid because of a sentence he doesn’t agree with?

Senator Leahy stood up for sanity. We should be leaving the middle east not supporting their dictatorships, whether military or so called royal families. Why send the egyptian military dictatorship billions of dollars to murder and imprison the people of Egypt? Why send billions of dollars to Israel so they can continue with their apartheid ? the Saudi family are certainly more responsible for 9/11 than Saddam ever was but did we go after Saudi Arabia? no we went after some one totally unrelated. All that’s considered is what is good for the great american/corporate empire. If all the usofa can do is support murderous thugs in the middle east we need to get out of there.
