The Foolishness of war. HOMS.
Proof; if ever needed.

An ancient, once enterprising, city completely ruined.
Its teeming population pay the price.
The short-term fury of war.
What a waste!

Basher al-Assad, his forces must keep in power:
The Battle of HOMS seemingly won, with toil and blood: Oh so much!
Silence of thousands, upon thousands; his soldiers lain in graves unmarked;
But what victory? A marked man, Assad’s become:
A determined isolated bullet deciding his war – all of it – at any time!

The rebels also, many of thousands, silenced of their fury and hate,
Lying still in graves so shallow: mothers, awaiting return;
But their lucky friends; their breath intact, but fury now abated,
They drive, in their coaches; but with a Cross of Red in their front:
Away, from ghostly HOMS.

But a pre-determined, war preventive stake,
From Basher al-Assad and would-be fighters;
HOMS and Syrians could’ve thrived; all at peace:
And without the furies of waste and the foolishness of war.
