Afghanistan’s civil war continues. This Taliban attack proves that the government can’t protect its own soldiers inside its capital. Therefore, it can’t protect its citizens, its primary duty. The rule is that rebels don’t win rebellions, governments lose them. That is the intelligent, strategic reason behind the apparent madness. It is a cold form of intelligent strategy, but it is still there.

China, Russia, and 4 central Asian lands form the SCO, a military, political, and economic alliance that agreed in 2011 to watch Afghanistan after the US and NATO departure that was scheduled for 2014. They conducted joint police and military maneuvers to prepare. Unwisely for the US, Obama chose to extend the US presence to 2016. After 13.25 years of war, it is unlikely that Obama will be able to achieve victory with 2 more years. However, the US will spend many billions of dollars that it doesn’t have to achieve a bigger defeat.
