Americans worry that illegal migrants threaten way of life, economy

Eating crap food and watching teevee or other lit box? Having a bunch of guns and shooting anything that moves, including neighbors? Not letting your children go outside and play because of stranger danger? Using those silly paper covers on (women’s only) toilet seats and flushing every time you pee? Being so freaked out about ‘germs’ you have to use carcinogenic soap-like products in the fricking grocery store? Ostentatious displays of wealth in cookie-cutter MacMansions on cul-de-sacs torn out of forest and meadow land?

Count me out, thanks.

Wow. I am flabbergasted. This may be the most balanced piece I have seen on Reuters, in- ever. I was certain it would (once again) paint Obama as the poor victim, and the GOP as the great evil unfairly attacking him again. Well done. Incidentally, it’s just silly to keep calling it “Immigration Reform.” What’s being reformed? Giving free citizenship to illegals isn’t reform. And it doesn’t fix the real problem- getting them out and keeping others from coming in without going through the existing system (which works, when it is used).

Actually, the number of low and unskilled jobs in America has decreased dramatically over the years as mechanisation improves, so the jobs available to them are more valuable than ever. I find that the people who are most devoted to letting every single poor person in the world into America do not really know any poor Americans and their opinion is intellectual rather than practical.

I guess they have not actually met Americans who have looked so long for a job they have given up. They are not good at wiring letters or organising. They are as defenceless as the poor illegals we let in. I have friends like that who were once in the middle class and fell thru the cracks during the great rescission. They were never able to get a job again that paid more than $7. They lost their home and now live in a camper. Maybe you have contemptuous words for them that you do not have for the illegals who have taken their jobs. Are they victim of a corrupt system? Yes. Does this change their problem? No.

There are people who make America-bashing an art form and blame everything on America. In fact, the reason countries are poor is much more often caused by lack of democracy, repression of opportunity and a system that creates poverty rather than wealth. Some of these poor countries and their failed systems predate the existence of the United States. Their poverty continues over the centuries and people from these places will be trying to illegally enter America for centuries. Some people blame America for everything but leave a little bit for just plain lousy governments.

Last but certainly not least, terrorism is rising in the world and America is a prime target. A hole in our borders hundreds of miles wide is like a beacon that says, “blow me up.” When that happens I am sure the same pimple who support illegal immigration will blame our government rather than the people who fought against a wall or secure borders.

The US needs to control the border, and maybe even build a wall, but there are so many positive long-term benefits from immigration.
1) We have a common and shared future considering how interdependent our economies are becoming(Mexico is the 10th largest economy in the world now). Regional trade blocks are emerging in the world, which will put the USA at a disadvantage, if we don’t unite.
2) Mexicans integrate very well, unlike other groups, and they are bringing awesome culture that only contributes. They share our Judeo-Christian values. I love Mexicans… they are some of the nicest family values oriented people(which the US is losing).
3) The USA will have a Spanish speaking entrepreneurial class to do business with Central & South America, which will give our companies an advantage over Europe & Asia.
4) It helps solve the social security shortfall dilemma with all the baby-boomers starting to retire, and improved the ratio of those working and those on SS.

The real threat to our American way of life is the loss of our middle class. If you want to know who’s responsible for the loss of our middle class, follow the money. Who has gotten rich by squeezing every dime they could take from the middle class and then hoarding the wealth for themselves? Illegal immigrants? Not hardly! It’s the oligarchy (look it up) that has arisen in the United States–the top 1% of the population currently hoards 37% of all wealth in the United States. The top 20% of the population has nearly 88% of the total wealth in the United States. That leaves the bottom 80% of the population with only 12% of the wealth. THAT is what threatens our way of life. And the gap keeps getting bigger and bigger. But, as long as the oligarchy can keep the population fighting each other (“you f—king liberals!” “you f–cking conservatives!”), or keep them pointing fingers at the wrong culprits (e.g., illegal immigrants), then the oligarchy can continue to squeeze the wealth out of the middle class until the U.S. has no more middle class.

Ignorant racists call others racists regarding illegal immigration because for them everything is about them and their race and their self hatred because Latin America is such a dump.

I grew up in Los Angeles and I witnessed all the county hospitals going out of business because of all the illegals going to them and not paying. I saw the landscaping business removed as a career for Americans. I saw the schools fill up with illegal immigrants’ kids and become ghettos, all of them on free breakfast and lunch costing the state billions. Above is an awful lot of anecdotal evidence – CSParty and UKantHndleTruth what evidence is there that the individual stories you have are uniquely caused by illegal immigration? Latin America isn’t exactly a dump in many places, though I wouldn’t trade it for life here in the states for sure. Not speaking English nor ethnicity really equate necessarily to being illegal.

Economically speaking immigration should be a boon for our country – we do not have natural population growth which is part of the root of slower economic growth in the EU and Japan. The jobs ‘illegal immigrants’ take are the $7 jobs, although immigration reform would actually push for more educated immigrants who at the moment are “taking american jobs” if you want to say that overseas (simply put, we have a ton of need in terms of job prospects, its more that the training in our educational system doesn’t match the need, which is IT driven). Pulling the bottom down if you want to look at wages doesn’t equate to middle class wages dropping or stagnating, those are separate issues (its not a cascade effect from the bottom). Jobs are not being lost to immigration – most of these workers live at economic well-being levels equivalent to those on welfare, so by not being citizens you could actually argue they are less of a drain on the system.

I could go on, but immigration is only scary if you have systems that can be abused (ERs are one, but that’s not just illegal immigrants that abuse that) or you’re afraid of competition, which seems to be more uniquely un-American than anything else.

Sure, there are a few, but it is not the steady inflow by the 10s of thousands coming across from the south, bringing high crime rates, significant drain on government/public services with little contribution, and a penchant to send 10s of billions back to their home countries. Mexico is rich in natural resources and has a hard working population with good judeo Christian and family values. It would be beneficial for the US as it would give our country more territory etc, and it would be good for the Mexican people as it would give them access to a more functional system of governance that would allow their poor to achieve middle class status by their hard work, just as the poor in the US can here. It is an unconventional solution, but one that would work for the benefit of al of us, Mexicans and us people alike.

Does not help that the right helps fan the flames of emotion and hate with their cries of ‘invaders’ and ‘return to sender’.

We have always been a nation that welcomes immigrants and allows them to come here to make something of themselves and their families future. It is one of our strong points, and one of the root causes of our economic success.

Lastly an FYI for all the delusional righties out there, if you are illegal you are not eligible for government benefits. Plus most illegals do not even try and get them for fear of deportation. Couple that with the fact that many work with fake SS numbers and still have FICA taxes removed from their pay, while NEVER getting a benefit from it, and you come to the logical conclusion that illegal workers are a net positive to SS trust fund.

We would need to know the actual questions asked of those who were polled to know if the this story represents reality. What was the question? We know what is implied by reuters, but that may not be true. I doubt that people actually think that illegal aliens threaten our way of life. Anyway, what is our way of life? I see it as a fascist government controlled by corporations that own the politicians and use the government for special favoratism to suppress a free market. In addition it has a foriegn policy that uses tax payer money to pay weapons companies and the military to invade third world countries and take their natural resources and all the while only allowing certain connected corporations the access to lucrative contracts associated with those military actions, again payed for by american tax payers. This is all enabled by an uninformed and calloused populous who lack education and demands jobs but lacks the ability to be productive individual (at least the most vocal on the right and the most brainwashed on the left). So, maybe it does need to change. Maybe reuters asked those polled this question. If illegal immigrants are made legal citizens and allowed to vote in democrats will the current fascist favoritism be threatened. And, of course, everyone would say yes, because it would be. But then when they report it, instead of calling our current condition the current fascist favoritism, they simply change that to “our way of life”. See, that why we need the question.

Nothing has done more to diminish the quality of life for the middle class through higher housing (land) costs, competition for jobs, greater poverty, mortgage fraud, medicare fraud, crime, cost of public schools, cost of college, depletion of resources, burden on the taxpayer and overall congestion than the increase of and change in population since 1965, driven almost entirely by immigration.

Because we are overpopulated, millions of young people graduating this year will never be able to buy a home in the town where they were born. What sort of person wishes for that?
The high price of housing is a major factor in poorer quality of life for the middle class and the poor. Population density is the main driver of the price of land, and thus the price (and quality) of housing. High immigration is the main driver of population density.
See, for example, Immigration and the revival of American Cities by Jacob L. Vigdor for the Americas Society/Council of the Americas and the Partnership for a New American Economy, in which he claims that more than 40 million immigrants currently in the united states have increased housing prices nationwide by $3.7 trillion. Or, get the population and housing price data for 1900 to 2010 from the Bureau of the Census and do your own analysis. Don’t forget that change in population leads change in price by ten or twenty years. (You won’t find many studies on this politically incorrect subject).

Re competition for jobs, note that companies such as Hewlett Packard have laid off thousands, but seek H1B visas for replacement.
Re poverty, note that the USDA is advertising food stamps in Spanish, and that the US Census shows that Hispanics are disproportionate users of welfare (why are we importing poverty? Don’t we have enough of our own?) In Los Angeles County alone, with the $550 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year, according to LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich.
Re mortgage fraud, note the disproportionate number of immigrants involved.
Re medicare fraud, note the disproportionate number of immigrants involved, as evidenced by the HHS OIG most wanted list, and the fact that Glendale, California is the medicare fraud capitol of the US.

@oraclejones – Look we are a country of immigrates and its one of America strengths. Up to recently, we have never controlled our borders. Growing up in Texas, I could cross the border and friends could cross the border with no hassles. Up until the 1930′s even non-citizens could vote in the US. The country didn’t end back then.

Immigrates don’t bring in drugs, smugglers do.The demand for drugs is domestic, and the cartels are just businesses fulfilling consumer demand. Want to stop illegal drugs from across the border, do what Colorado did, legalize drugs.

Coming from the building industry, non-citizens workers work hard and pay taxes. Baby boomers are retiring, we need new young people. Famers need workers.

A few years ago, a county in Colorado, they tried a program to hire people on unemployment to harvest crops and were paid $ 18.00/hr, the program failed, few people were willing to work in the fields more than 2-3 days, so the county went back to using migrant workers.

Finally, closing the US/Mexico border won’t change the people flow, most just fly in on a visa and don’t leave and a high percentage of undocumented people are Asian, not Mexicans.

A lot of the arguments here seem to be anecdotal – language and ethnicity do not necessarily equate to illegality of immigration, and the assumption I believe some perceive as being racist when it might be unintentional. I would hope many of you step back and think about logical thought progression and causation – with a population of 320 M, it would take a substantial number of illegal immigrants above those in the country now to overwhelm and actually effect our culture and way of life. Economically speaking the only way individuals willing to work for less with longer hours could erode a middle class is if middle class wealth was driven by the income of the lowest tier of earners (i.e. legally so). Eroding low income wages would only effect other low income workers, and respectfully the idea that competition is bad in these fields is frankly as un-American sounding as you can get.
The right kind of immigration should be a boon for this country economically – we would have no population growth without it, which is one of the key ingredients leading to stagnant wealth in Europe and Japan (overpopulation implies we as a country can no longer grow, which is not the case). Further reform would bring back a substantial number of jobs to this country, as we have a significant mismatch between job openings (of which there are plenty but often requiring technology specific skills) and domestic skill sets. Many of these jobs would be “on-shored” with reform. Further, most of these immigrant workers who do thrive in this low earning class should for example add more value to society than those who can legally obtain welfare and chose to live off it. While welfare is an unfortunate state for any individual to find themselves in, I don’t think many of the individuals on this comment section really support a welfare state either.
There are issues with laws which are set up to be abused, such as the ER rules in the US. But I do not know whether these are the exception to the rule or the rule, and I have not seen anyone on this comment section demonstrate one way or another beyond anecdotal evidence using language and ethnicity as a proxy for legality. There are much larger concerns than illegal immigration (I’ll give protecting against terrorist threats a significantly greater worry in the same discussion however).

How ridiculous would Obama look after saying less than a year ago that expanding DACA “would be ignoring the law in a way that would be very difficult to defend with legal arguments. So that’s not an option.”

Here is when Obama said that:

Diaz-Balart asked the president about what possibility is there to stop the deportations through executive order, to which Obama replied that the road is “through Congress.”

The president rejected the possibility that his government suspended deportations than those under 30 who were brought illegally to the United States during his childhood undocumented and said it would be “very difficult to defend” legal arguments.

“If we begin to expand that, then essentially I would be ignoring the law in a way that would be very difficult to defend with legal arguments. So that’s not an option,” he said.

Don’t you people realize that undocumented WORKERS cut your grass, prepare your food, wash your dishes, and will eventually empty your bed pan?

We are the “mules” who drive the American economy, whilst you reap the profits from our sweat and toil. How many of you pinche Americans are willing to pick crops (in the hot sun) for $7/hour with no benefits? You people would not survive 30 days without us.

Let me give you clueless Americans a history lesson: When America could no longer exploit African slaves or Chinese Coolies, they were replaced with undocumented Latino workers. We’re here because greedy American corporations are eager to hire us for low wages/no benefits whilst your Government has “turned a blind eye” and subsidized the neo-slave trade.

Let me explain how the process works:

I come this country (without a pot to p in) and pick your carrots for $7 per hour: that’s roughly $14K per year for my brown rse to sweat like rancid pork whilst you grin-goes enjoy climate control and send your spoiled, moron kids to college.

The flip side of the coin is something that your politicians won’t tell you :- because some of my kids were born here, I am entitled to a whole potpourri of free benefits (which you have to pay for!): Medicaid, SSI, WIC, SNAP/Food Stamps, Section 8 housing, AFDC, EITC, subsidized home utilities, Head Start, free public school (pre K-12) for my 5 kids, etc. With Obamacare, the quality of my family’s health care will be the same as yours! And I don’t pay a single peso in income taxes! Just the taxpayer cost of sending my 5 kids to public school is twice what I made working!! And my kids will go to college free (via financial aid & minority scholarships). If you add all the free benefits to my paltry “slave” salary – I make over $100,000.00 per year – not bad for picking carrots! Would you not cross a wide open border to make six figures (tax free) for a job that requires no education or skills?

We undocumented WORKERS who have been enslaved by your countries imperialistic / capitalistic system are reacting: we continue to grow in numbers through immigration (legal or otherwise) and a higher birth rate. Meanwhile, you bourgeois, white people are having fewer children because you are forced to pay for our needs as well as yours. The same thing is happening in Europe and Palestine. The land that was stolen from us – will be reclaimed.

We have already won by taking away your freedom of speech – that is why you can only “vent” and “complain” using anonymous forums such as this meaningless blog. If you spoke out publicly, you would be immediately branded a racist and probably lose your job. Meanwhile, we Latinos are free to speak out without fear of wearing a scarlet “R” letter. My ancestors walked 8,000 miles to this continent in their bare feet 13,000 years before Colombus.. this is Mi Tierra… Nuevo Aztlán.

I’m on SSI disability now – but my daughters are primary school teachers and the seeds they sow shall never be uprooted.

The socialist revolution is coming! We will soon be the majority! They’re gonna be some big changes grin-goes! The slaves will become Masters. Like the Bible says: “The meek shall inherit the earth.” Watch “The Planet of the Apes” if you don’t understand.

Don’t blame Latinos because you people contracept and abort yourselves out of existence.

10% of the people in your country have 90% of the wealth…The New Aztlán will tap into this cache for many generations… then what you call the middle class will be brought to heel.

Most of you will not read my post – but the TRUTH doesn’t change because you ignore it… in fact – I prefer you bury your head in the sand whilst mis soldados cross our border and take what’s ours.

Those Great Pre-Columbian Civilizations never died – they were only suppressed by European Imperialism. They will return with a vengeance. Your Columbus Holiday will be no more… it will be Día de la Revolución!

You right wingers have been reading too much of the idealist Ayn Rand… the wealth in this country was not earned by the hard-working nouveau riche… rather it was inherited by lazy sloths from the ancestors who enslaved my people. Yes… it’s payback time! … and Democracy will be your hanging noose that you are forced to tie!

Time is on my side… the end state of slow poison is the same as a quick poison.

My warning comes too late – you have been asleep too long… besides educating Americanos is like trying to sell roses… at a fish market!

El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!

The US definitely must do something about illegal immigration.

Legal immigration is not the issue.

How the US can allow so many illegals in their country is beyond belief. Every nation has the right to limit who can become citizens from outside their country. When people sneak in–it is not fair to the legal immigrants waiting in line–it is not fair to American citizens.

It is not a RIGHT for a foreigner to obtain American citizenship–it is a privilege granted by that nation.

While it is true that America is a nation of immigrants–and should continue to allow immigration–they should choose the best and brightest from around the world and in some cases, for humanitarian reasons accept those in need.

With a population of 300 million plus and growing, there are limits. Many more people want to live, for economic reasons, in the US than the economy could bear. So there have to be rules and limits–and that depends upon many factors.

Latino nations have been political and economic failures since their creation, and this has pushed illegal and legal immigration. They form the largest percentage of illegals.

As Mark Levin said recently (paraphrase) Not all cultures are equal. If they were, people wouldn’t be coming to US to live. They are coming here for the most part to escape failed Socialist Govt’s that they and their ancestors put in power. They won’t contribute more than they take out. We already have ENOUGH citizens like that! (NOT talking about our own retirees, elderly, disabled or orphaned, so don’t bother with your dogwhistle. You aren’t THAT stupid.

The only reason we have immigration law is to import people who can contribute to our nation, cause America to flourish. The immigrants that have illegally entered for the most part are low skilled, uneducated people who don’t want to assimilate. And you know their poor grandmothers, grandfathers and mothers will have to join them here and we won’t be so cruel as to turn them away from our SS/Medicaid, etc.
I’ve heard several LEGAL immigrants who’ve recently waited up to and beyond 3 years to gain entry, paid $3000, complain why in the heck did they bother to pay and do it legally? They didn’t get free (Free? Heck to the no!OUR GRANDKIDS will pay for that!)
The Boston Marathon bombers? Their mother was a supposed ‘refugee’ when they arrived. She returned and left her sons here. Some refugee. And the FBI contacted immigration and told them NOT to let the older brother back in when he went home for an extended stay. They wouldn’t refuse him entry because of the stripping away of authority by this administration. We have enough immigration law. We just don’t have people who will enforce it. SECURE THE BORDER! Do you know they have been finding tunnels between Mexico & US? Hezbollah have even been caught. And for every 3 that get caught, there are 50 that didn’t. 80% of the ‘poor children’ that have been flooding here? NOT children. Teens up to age 19. The border agents say cartels are in every major city, and that EVERY town is now a border town. We simply are NOT being told of the MILLIONS that have come here the past few years. Wake up folks. “Seventy percent of Americans – including 86 percent of Republicans – believe undocumented immigrants threaten traditional U.S. beliefs and customs, according to the poll.”
And the same thing was said in 1796 during Adam’s administration as well as in the 1840s and the period from 1880-1920. Most of the people saying this are the descendants of those immigrants. Methinks that the Spanish language and the number of Catholics is the main complaint.

Aug 07 2014: “…a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Americans are deeply worried that illegal immigration is threatening the nation’s culture and economy.” Aug 11, 2014: Today, Reuters journalists write that most American want illegal immigrants to stay.

Can Reuter’s reporting and information still be trusted as objective and impartial or have the journalists separated into political camps each espousing their own candidates and world view? If Reuters fails to remain objective; where else can one go?
