I guess this statement confuses me: the NSC statement said. “We only went public today when it was clear a number of media outlets were preparing to report on the operation and that we would have no choice but to acknowledge it.” If this supposedly was a secret covert operation, how and why would the media report on it?

Likewise Jimmy Carter sent 5 helicopters to their fate to Iran on a so called rescue mission. Then the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated the Iranians freed all US hostages. Iran knew Reagan would have flattened their nation. There is a big difference between weak willed liberals and democrats vs. upright strong republicans.

I am not sure whether the US military or Intelligence asked Israeli intelligence for help. I am mentioning this only because the IDF and Shin Bet are confronted with this type of behavior on a daily basis.
