Trains are confined to tracks and aren’t that hard to avoid being hit by. In 1st grade back way in 1956 they taught us to stop, look, and listen. I’d like someone to tell me why this was anything but 100% avoidable, unless the truck driver was suddenly incapacitated by a medical emergency, and no one has suggested that but myself.

This is horrible, but If the crossing gates and signals were working, what the hell was the float doing on the track? Was the driver “out to lunch?” A fast-moving freight train that weighs thousands of tons needs a lot of distance to come to a stop. We seem to have a national brain paralysis when it comes to things as ordinary as trains. Not only do we have idiots driving around the gates; we’ve had fatality accidents caused by angry males crashing through the gates. flora68 makes a good point: We have a deficiency in safety education.
