Batteries are several orders of magnitude too expensive to use as grid-attached storage, and offer little prospect of becoming competitive. The only cost-effective methods are hydro-electric pumped storage or compressed-air storage.

There are nearly 100 hydro-electric pumped storage projects operating in the United States, and an equivalent amount elsewhere. Of the U.S. projects, two utilize an underground lower reservoir–an arrangement that can be used in the flat lands of the Midwest & great plains.
