having had the ‘delight’ of spending 2 days in Saudi Arabia and the Emirates as a longhaul transit stop, I can attest that they treat their immigrant labourers worse than pigs. People can be extraordinarily sadistic just for the sake of their own enjoyment. You are right, normal people do not behave this way. (i.e. vp Dick Cheney not being anywhere near normal. Its outrageous.My driver who went to saudi came back with a black eye and cigarette marks on his hands. He was beaten up by his master and to make matters worse the saudi’s children ill treated him by spitting on him every time they were taken to school. Regarding Srilankans, they are peace loving and humble people and tend to suffer in silence.Do not mistake that this is happening only to non Muslims, even Muslims from other countries suffer the same fate in Saudi but they are either too shocked or do not want to complain. The best thing for anyone to do is not to go or send anyone you know to the gulf for becoming a Maid and also treat them shabbily when they visit your country and act arrogant. Ive heard Malaysian drivers complain about the arrogant nature of the Saudi tourists. My wife, family, and I live in Dallas. We are five blocks away from the largest Muslim temple in north Texas, and one of the largest in the United States. These “peaceful citizens” regularly disrupt traffic, and occasionally hold their prayers towards Mecca in the middle of a six-lane road. All the while, the city of Dallas provides uniformed police officers to protect these “citizens,” legal or not. You can fill in the rest of the blanks regarding how decent American taxpaying citizens feel about this and our Muslim president.

Islam is no more a ‘cult’ than Catholicism or Judaism. If you persist in referring to other religions as ‘cults’ please include your own. There are hypocrits, torturers, liars, thieves in abundance in every religion; that is a side effect of being human. I agree, however, that the Saudi couple, if they actually did this horrendous thing for the reason implied, should be subjected to the same treatment and prohibited from hiring any maids for a set amount of time.

No religion or ethnic group has a monopoly on cruelty. But there are certainly some regions and some governments where a much higher degree of cruelty is tolerated or even encouraged. Let’s see what the government of Saudi Arabia does about this particular event.

The problem is not Islam, the problem is cultural. Slavery has only been outlawed here since 1967. So it is like 1866 Alabama (without northern troops). They think they can still do what they always have done.
The King is trying to bring them to the 20th century (from the 15th). It will take time. But the majority of the people are as kind as you outranged commenters.
The solution is for India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan, and Philippines to refuse exit visas for workers unless the Kingdom permits consulates to visit the worksites of these workers for private interviews and have the power to take them back under diplomatic pouch.
People who flee an abusive workplace are called “run a ways”. They are then forced to live underground since their “sponsors” hold their passports. There is a law against running away!

So, her family realized when she complained from pain. So, she could not tell them that she was hammered with 24 nails.
