If Iran, which at the very least has questionable rationality, acquires nuclear weapons it will likely spark an arms race in the region which will further destabilize the region. It has only a few real allies in the region, and it will no doubt begin to act very aggressively towards its neighbors and our allies. Furthermore, Iran is one of the largest state sponsors of terror and there is every reason to believe that Iran will supply terror organizations with nuclear material. And who is nicer to us? We snub our allies, we have to make giant concessions to second rate powers like Russia, Iran is bolstered, the afghan pres is moving farther away from us, there is tension with the aussies. China US relations have become strained. What are you talking about?

I find it interesting that Gates makes this statement right on the heels of news today that Israel has warned all of its citizens to vacate the Sinai peninsula between Israel and Egypt. Israel has also distributed chem/bio protection kits to its citizens in recent days. It certainly appears that Israel is preparing for an imminent attack upon Iran’s nuke facilities.

I think that we know this, and that Gates may have been tasked with issuing a statement that downplays the immediacy of the Iranian threat in an attempt to undermine public support for an Israeli attack. He may also have made this statement in order to delegitimize any Israeli action and to thereby distance the U.S. from it.

Regardless of the reason for the statement, it has become clear that the Obama administration is in the process of throwing Israel, historically one of our closest allies, to the wolves. Obama’s behavior toward Israel has been despicable.

Hmmmm. Okay, I realize that our CURRENT “president” would have negotiated with Hitler, so that leaves them until the next presidential election to bomb us with a suitcase. Then we open up and nuke their entire country to glass and polish it out with Windex.

A nuclear Iran is probably the best thing that could happen to the middle east. While the Israelis try to lie and manipulate the world into feeling sorry for them the fact remains that they have nukes. A situation of mutually assured self destruction can only bring that region closer to peace. And as to us in the USA, the best thing we could do is to sever ties with Israel and let them reap that which they have sown.

There is a difference. Israel is using the weapons as a defense to the Muslims. Iran has already said that they will use the weapons as offensive weapons. The 1,800 truckloads of materials, while I personally believe that there was probably something to the story, is still unsubstantiated. The 550 metric tons of yellowcake, on the other hand, is a well-established fact. This is precisely why it was absolutely necessary to go into Iraq.

While Saddam’s capabilities in recent years to put his stockpile of nasty substances to use may have been exaggerated, his possession of them clearly was not. After 9/11, we simply could not take the chance that uranium, sarin gas, or some other deadly substance would end up in the hands of terrorists. The leftists will argue that Saddam was not a Jihadist, and therefore would not have given these weapons to Al Qaeda, but we have to remember that he had begun to court radical groups at that time, going so far as to allow them to train in his country and offering $25,000 payments to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers. Given this behavior, it would have been the height of irresponsibility for President Bush to have gambled our national security on Saddam Hussein’s good will.

The only reason that the US is threatened is because of our continued support for Israel. Human Rights Violations, criminal activities, assassinations and more are committed by Israel against Muslim peoples every single day and the most we can do is to send a diplomatic message of please don’t do that. If Iran could really field a nuclear weapon, Israel would have already taken them out.

While the Defense Secretary may not “believe” that Iran can be nuke-capable in months, the quoted statement should have been followed up by the reporter. I’d really like to know if the “year” was meant to state how long until Iran was potentially nuke-capable, or that it had been that long since “the last time [we] talked about it.”

Other wise we would not be sending 3 million dollars a day to Israel while borrowing from China to send aid to Israel. Twelve months, wow!! Well, at least that gives us time to get our personal affairs in order. But the good thing is that Canada, Mexico and Chile have committed to improving their storage of fissionable material. We’ve been sitting by watching this happen for how many years now?? We took the same approach with Iran that we took with China. China now has nukes and a missile delivery system. Why are we surprised that Iran is getting them too?

Hmmm, the president of Iran has frequently warned that he wants to “wipe Israel off of the map” and our current defense secretary shrugs this off as, “well, they won’t have nukes for a year?”

How comforting.

Next question… since we’ve been wasting the last 15 months “threatening” sanctions against Iran, even though Chinese and Russian support have been wavering, at best (and they have veto power in the UN), at what point does this administration realize that we’ve been getting the proverbial “middle finger” and decide to take real action?

Or are we just going to sit on the sidelines and let Israel do our dirty work for us?

If Iran gets nuclear weapons, an arms race will spiral out of control within the Middle East. Is there anyone out there that thinks this is a good thing?

Last night on FOX, they showed an interview between an Iraq official and a reporter with a hijab on. The Iranian offical told her that sanctions would only make them angry, making it harder to obtain what they need and that if America attacks Iran in any way, the entire Middle East will be on fire.

If Iran develops a small nuclear device, they would not bring it through a commercial airport. They would smuggle it through the Mexican border and drive it to New York City or Los Angeles in a car.

But let’s think about a car, since you have suggested it. 400-600kg of uranium… You’d need a very beefy car to carry it. Not your average Fiat 500, or VW Beetle. You’ve got 400-600kg of uranium or 200kg plutonium. Then you’ve got the detonation equipment, neutron-reflector and lead-shielding. All in all, a viable nuclear bomb takes at least a tonne. So you’re looking at either a large van with specially enhanced suspension, or else, a semi truck; or a container in a container vessel.

So, my original point – not suitable at all for a false leg. Hardly suitable for a car. Possibly suitable for a large van. Definitely feasible with a large truck. Depends on technology. With Iran’s level of technical development, they’re unlikely to be able to develop anything smaller than a large truck bomb or shipment container in the next five to ten years.

Don’t forget, Mexico is hardly going to want to make themselves the number-1 enemy of the USA by helping anyone do such a thing.
