    Shares of American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc  rose on 
Friday, after the auto parts company reported its first-quarter results.

    The stock added 10 percent to $1.10. Among its peers, Johnson Controls Inc fell 1.8 percent to $18.67, TRW Automotive Holdings Corp  lost 
0.9 percent to $8.54 and Gentex Corp  shed 4.1 percent to $12.82.

    The U.S. factory sector shrank further in April, but at a slower pace than 
expected, suggesting some stabilization in the sector and in the broader 
economy, according to the Institute of Supply Management. 
    The ISM's index of national factory activity rose to 40.1 in April from 
36.3 in March. Analysts polled by Reuters were expecting a reading of 38. 
    Any reading below 50 represents contraction in the sector.

    U.S. consumers felt more confident about the economy last month than at any 
time since the September failure of Lehman Brothers, a survey showed on 
Friday. 
    The Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers said its final 
index of confidence climbed to 65.1 in April from 57.3 in March. Analysts 
expected a reading of 61.9 for April.

    Shares of Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp  soared on Friday, after the 
company reported first-quarter earnings that beat expectations and gave a 
second-quarter outlook above market expectations. 
    The company was also upgraded to buy from hold at Needham.

    The stock surged 34 percent to $11 while peer company Dick's Sporing Goods 
Inc  was down 0.3 percent to $18.94.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 
    The U.S. Federal Reserve needs to continue to regulate the largest banks in 
order to monitor developments in the financial system, James Bullard, the St. 
Louis Federal Reserve president said on Friday. 
    Bullard added that a regulatory overhaul is likely following the financial 
crisis, arguing that it had worked well for small banks during the crisis 
because it includes deposit insurance, high-quality monitoring of banks and a 
clear, credible resolution regime.
