Nov 9 (Reuters) - Cypress Bioscience Inc (CYPB.O) posted a narrower-than-expected quarterly loss, helped by revenue from fibromyalgia drug Savella.
For the third quarter, the company posted a net loss of $5.5 million, or 14 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $4.1 million, or 11 cents a share, in the year-ago period.
The company's total revenue jumped to $6.1 million from $979,000 in the year-ago quarter. The total revenue includes $5.2 million in commercial revenue related to Savella.
Cypress and partner Forest Laboratories Inc (FRX.N) launched the drug Savella in April for fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and decreased physical function.
The drug was originally developed by French drug maker Pierre Fabre and the rights for North America were licensed to Cypress Bioscience.
According to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, analysts were expecting the company to post a loss of 21 cents a share on revenue of $5.7 million for the quarter.
Shares of Cypress closed at $6.78 Friday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Jennifer Robin Raj in Bangalore; Editing by Ratul Ray Chaudhuri)
