Feb 9 (Reuters) - Speech recognition technology supplier Nuance Communications Inc (NUAN.O) lowered its 2009 revenue range, and its shares fell about 4 percent in after-market trade.
The change reflects a more cautious view of revenue growth in the second half of the fiscal year, the company said on its website.
"Consolidated organic growth is likely to lag historical levels, offset by strong operating efficiencies from the previous acquisitions they have done in the past two years," Avondale Partners analyst John Bright said by phone.
For 2009, the company expects revenue of $952 million to $1.08 billion, compared with its prior forecast of $1.02 billion to $1.14 billion.
For the second quarter, it forecast adjusted earnings of 21 cents to 23 cents a share. On a net basis, it expects a loss of 5 cents to 3 cents a share.
For the first quarter, it posted net income of $61 million or 24 cents a share, excluding items, for the first quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with $38.8 million, or 18 cents a share, for the year-ago period.
Analysts on average forecast first-quarter earnings of 22 cents a share, excluding special items, according to Reuters Estimates.
For the quarter, revenue from the professional services, subscription and hosting segment rose 45 percent.
The Burlington, Massachusetts-based company competes with AT&T Inc (T.N), International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O).
Shares of the company were at $10.61 in after-market trade. They closed at $11.03 Monday on Nasdaq.
