UPDATE 1-Champion Enterprises Q1 results lag Street

April 24 (Reuters) - Maker of factory-built houses Champion Enterprises Inc (CHB.N) posted a wider-than-expected quarterly loss and revenue that was below expectations, hurt by the prolonged downturn in the housing industry.

"While we look forward to a better second quarter, we do not anticipate a material improvement in our results until the second half of the year," Chief Executive William Griffiths said in a statement.

The company reported a first-quarter loss of $17.6 million, compared with a loss of $20.5 million in the year-ago quarter.

Net sales dropped 65 percent to $105.2 million.

Shares of the Troy, Michigan-based Champion Enterprises closed at 52 cents Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.
