UPADTE 1-Cadence Design posts narrower-than-expected Q1 loss

April 29 (Reuters) - Microchip-design software maker Cadence Design Systems Inc (CDNS.O) posted a narrower-than-expected quarterly loss, helped by a 19 percent drop in costs, and narrowed its loss view for the year.
Cadence's first-quarter net loss widened to $63.3 million, or 25 cents a share, from a loss of $33.1 million, or 13 cents a share, a year ago.
Excluding items, the company posted a loss of 10 cents a share, 2 cents narrower than analysts expectations.
Revenue fell 24 percent to $206.3 million. Analysts on average expected $204.6 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
The company narrowed its 2009 loss view by 10 cents a share to a range of 77 cents to 89 cents.
It also narrowed its adjusted loss view by 3 cents a share to between 21 cents and 33 cents.
The company, however, backed its full-year revenue view of $830 million to $870 million.
The company, whose rivals include Synopsys Inc (SNPS.O), expects a second-quarter loss of 7 cents to 9 cents a share, excluding items, on revenue of $205 million to $215 million.
Analysts on average were expecting a loss of 9 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $208.4 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
