FACTBOX-Foreign investment projects in Vietnam
Sept 22 (Reuters) - Vietnam has licensed a joint venture between Malaysia's Lion Industries (LLBM.KL) (LION.KL) and top shipbuilder Vinashin to build a $9.8 billion steel mill, the country's largest joint venture so far [ID:nHAN28140].
The project takes the total value of steel mill projects licensed so far this year in the Southeast Asian country to more than $27 billion, about half of the country's total new foreign direct investment pledges so far this year.
Last month, India's Tata Steel (TISC.BO) signed a joint
venture deal with Vietnam Steel Corp and Vietnam Cement
Industries to build a $5 billion steel plant [ID:nBOM245563].
In June, Taiwan's Formosa Heavy Industries (6505.TW) won a
licence for a $7.8 billion steel mill in the central province
of Ha Tinh.
Foreign direct investment in the first eight months of 2008 would jump more than four-fold from the same period last year to a record $47.2 billion, the Planning and Investment Ministry estimated.
Disbursement between January and August is estimated to have risen nearly 43 percent from the same period last year to $8 billion, the Foreign Investment Department said.
The following is a selection of major existing and prospective foreign investment projects in the Communist Party-governed country of 86.5 million people:
