The FTSE Small Cap index .FTSC closes 1.3 percent higher and the midcaps .FTMC gain 1.6 percent, while the blue chips .FTSE end the session down 2.3 percent.

Property company Quintain Estates & Development (QED.L) closes over 25 percent higher, extending strong gains made in the wake of Wednesday's announcement that its banking facilities have been renegotiated, and it is making good progress.

Dawson Holdings (DWN.L) closes 4 percent weaker after the print media distributor loses its contract with the Telegraph Media Group which, in the last financial year, generated a revenue of 52 million pounds.
