JOHANNESBURG, Feb 4 (Reuters) - South African packaging company Nampak Ltd (NPKJ.J) is making progress in selling under-performing assets, its chairman said on Wednesday.

"The economy right now doesn't make it easy, but we are making progress on selling non-performing assets," Nampak's chairman Trevor Evans, told Reuters on the sidelines of the company's annual general meeting.

Nampak said in September 2008 that it had a three-year strategic plan of its own to boost earnings, which includes generating cash by selling some under-performing and non-core businesses -- it did not specify which ones -- and turning other struggling units around.

Nampak said on Wednesday its quarter one results had met expectations.

Shares in Nampak traded flat at 13.20 rand by 1136 GMT while the Johannesburg All-share index index rose 2.13 percent. (Reporting by Tiisetso Motsoeneng)
