The FTSE Small Cap index .FTSC closes 1.1 percent lower, outperforming both the blue chips .FTSE and the midcaps .FTMC, which end the session down 3.5 percent and 2 percent, respectively.

Lamprell (LAM.L) closes more than 12 percent lower as the oil and gas services company slashes its final dividend by 74 percent and expresses caution over its outlook, in the wake of a 2009 profit warning on March 20.

Surf wear and fashion brand Hot Tuna (HTT.L) closes over 14 percent firmer after interim results which Seymour Pierce says are broadly in line with expectation, prompting the broker to reiterate its "buy" recommendation.
