*Shares jump 8 percent
TORONTO, June 1 (Reuters) - Theratechnologies Inc (TH.TO) a small Canadian biotechnology company, said on Monday a new drug application with U.S. regulators for a treatment to alleviate a condition inflicting some HIV-infected patients, sending its shares up 8 percent.
The treatment, tesamorelin, is used to treat the increase of fat accumulation in HIV-infected patients.
The company said it would work with the Food and Drug Administration to complete the review of the product.
"The filing of this NDA brings us ever closer to our main objective which is to bring tesamorelin, a molecule that was discovered and developed internally, to the market," Chief Executive Yves Rosconi said in a release.
The condition, known as HIV-associated lipodystrophy, can be caused by the patient's antiviral drug regimen or the virus itself. It causes changes in body composition including the accumulation of abdominal fat and the loss of fat in the limbs and face.
The shares were up 8 percent at C$2.97 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The company signed an agreement in October with EMD Serono Inc, a subsidiary of Merck KGaA (MRCG.DE), that gave EMD the exclusive commercialization rights to tesamorelin in the United States. ($1=$1.09 Canadian) (Reporting by Scott Anderson; Editing by Frank McGurty)
