NEW YORK, June 1 (Reuters) - Some U.S. stocks to watch on Monday:
GENERAL MOTORS CORP (GM.N)
The automaker filed for bankruptcy on Monday, forcing the iconic company into an era of government ownership. [ID:nN01398575]
Shares of the Dow component closed Friday at 75 cents.
PRUDENTIAL FINANCIAL INC (PRU.N)
The company said it would offer $1.25 billion of its common stock, after turning down Federal aid from the U.S. Treasury's Capital Purchase Plan. It intends to use the net proceeds from the offering for general corporate purposes. [ID:nBNG444955]
Shares fell 0.3 percent to $39.79 in premarket trading.
MERCK & CO (MRK.N)
ASTRAZENECA (AZN.N) (AZN.L)
The two companies will test two early-stage cancer drugs together, after preclinical evidence suggested that combining the two targeted therapies could make them more effective. [ID:nL1397283]
Shares of Merck, a Dow component, rose 0.5 percent to $27.71 in premarket trading on Monday while AstraZeneca ADRs rose 0.7 percent to $42.
GOLDMAN SACHS (GS.N)
The company was on Monday selling up to about $1.9 billion worth of shares in Industrial and Commercial Bank of China at a discount of 4 percent to 6 percent below its Monday closing price, according to a term sheet. [ID:nHKG187228]
Shares rose 1.7 percent to $147 in premarket trading.
YAHOO INC (YHOO.O)
Barclays upgraded the Internet company to overweight from equal weight, saying it was well positioned to benefit from a rebound in branded advertising spending. [ID:nBNG442130]
Shares were up 2.7 percent in premarket trading at $16.25 after they closed Friday at $15.84.
PLAYBOY ENTERPRISES INC (PLA.N)
The media company may offer Scott Flanders, the president of Freedom Communications, its vacant CEO post, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. [ID:nBNG353276]
Shares closed Friday at $3.33.
J.M. SMUCKER CO (SJM.N)
Barron's wrote that the company may be undervalued because of its predictable cash flow and the strength of such popular brands as Jif, Hungry Jack and Crisco. [ID:nN31405648]

WMS INDUSTRIES (WMS.N)
Barron's wrote that shares of the gambling equipment maker could fall, arguing that they were perfectly priced and that any disappointment could knock them down 10 to 30 percent. [ID:nN31350204]
Shares were trading 1.5 percent higher at $36 after closing Friday at $35.47.
STRAYER EDUCATION INC (STRA.O)
Barron's wrote that investors might want to cover their short positions in the company, after an analyst picked the education firm as his top investment pick. [ID:nN31411257]
Shares were flat at $184.27 in premarket trading.
VARIAN MEDICAL SYSTEMS (VAR.N)
Barron's wrote that the company's stock could rise 25 percent, arguing that it had a security and inspection unit that had growth potential. [ID:nN31389690]
Shares rose 2 percent to $36.50 in premarket trading after closing Friday at $35.76.
HURCO COS INC (HURC.O)
The industrial technology company on Friday posted a surprise second-quarter loss and revenue that was down 65 percent for the quarter. [ID:nWNAB4787]
Shares of the company were down 14.9 percent in premarket trading at $12.22. They closed at $14.36 on Friday.
TORREYPINES THERAPEUTICS INC TPTX.O
The company's board approved a plan to liquidate the company's assets, after considering potential strategic alternatives. [ID:nBNG444370]
